I bought my 1995 manual coupe C2 in 2011. Since then prices have a risen dramatically. I wonder if they'll have further still to go? Regardless of that, I have seen my initial outlay almost triple and the time has come to sell.

How much further do you think 993 (and actually all air cooled) prices have to rise?? Am I going to kick myself in another five years?

I might sell now if I were you. May turn out to be have been the wrong choice, but that's just how playing the market works.

If you don't want it any more then it is the right time to sell, otherwise not.

I was looking for a 993 a few years ago, and of course regret not buying.

I saw one recently...manual C2 NB varioram, c.90K miles and £50K. It was well maintained but needed front end paint, there was some rust around the windscreen, interior was tired etc. That was before getting it properly checked over.

They're lovely things, but you've got to really want one to pay that price. I doubt they'll get cheaper again but an immaculate Gen II 997 looks great value in comparison.

Unless you're waiting for negative interest rates, I'd sell now while the going is good.

Aldous Voice (Voicey) keeps a monthly record of the movement in Ferrari 360 prices on his webpage. Does anyone keep something similar for 993s?

Prices have softened of late -- not a big dip...just a few non collector spec cars have taken longer to sell than the sellers expected..

What will you buy instead..as mentioned above 997 gen2's look good value, a friend is thinking of selling his GTS (low miles/ high spec/PDK etc) which seems more sensible value at early £50's ( I was tempted at a 993 but this seems so much more fun)

PS Warning you haven't made any money until you sell.. biggrin

Friend sent me this graph last week
He bought shares in this company at point A, at point B he had enough to retire and never have to work again , but he held out for more...now worth less than he paid for them...

I think that the only thing we can be fairly sure of is that its highly unlikely that values will nose dive. They certainly will not go back to 2011 levels.

They will either keep rising, hold or maybe go down a little. But not by major amounts.

My money is (literally) on them holding fairly steady for the medium term.

Of course all of the above is in the bin if we have a major economic situation! You know, like leaving the EU or some such! biggrin

What will I buy instead? I'm trying to reduce the size of my garage! Although a 997GTS in the 50's sounds great value.

One car has to go: either my 360 or my 993. I'm going to advertise both and see which goes first. I genuinely can't decide which one to keep. I had the MOT done on the 993 last month and I'd done less than 1,000 miles in the last 12 months. It deserves better.

I'm going to put the feelers our with a couple to dealers later this week to see if they might be interested.

Why? To enjoy? To drive? To make money?

Good luck. I might be interested in the 993 if you'd like to pm some information!

I bought the car to drive and to replace my 964. And I drove it everywhere. But then I bought a great value 996 C4 (with Hartech engine rebuild) for weekly commute to London. A V12 ferrari followed for GT work. A 360 filled the supercar role and a 1977 Carrera 3.0 (Orange) filled the classic car slot. So I've ended up with 5 cars and I'm not driving my 993 except to give it an occasional good run.

If your friend is really willing to sell a good spec low miles GTS for low £50k's he's bonkers. Good spec cars going through reputable indy's are getting mid/low £60k's. SOR he can get close to £60k I reckon.

Is that not just the share price graph for Volkswagen Group over the past few years?

ETA: Genuinely curious as to what that company is. I don't trade or anything but follow financial news and don't recall a share price drop like that recently. The only one I can think of is a sapphire crystal company that got fked by Apple a little while ago.

If you don't drive it or need it you may as well sell it.....you'll make a good profit after all.....
I don't see the price comparisons with 997's as particularly relevant though-they are completely different
cars........
a 997 Carrera may be far quicker and better to drive but they are also fairly common and boring-
if I see a 993 out on the road I always look twice......they are a modern classic......
on the 911UK website there are often about 90+ different 997's for sale whilst at the same time
usually less than 10 different 993's.....they are far rarer and more special looking..many consider the 993
the finest 911 shape of them all. Yes a 997 is nicer to drive than a 993 but so is a M3 and lots of other cars
that are not 20yrs old.

yep your right - that's why he is now keeping it biggrin

He's just instructed Porsche to do the remidial work and add 2 years warranty - for 24 hours it was the cheapest GTS in the UK at £51k ....

  • ** back to the OP's question - sell now or drive
you've done well a 993 and 360..both done great on values but the real return is in the driving ****

I will be on the IOM this week driving over the mountain road (as near to flat out as possible) not sure the appreciation or not in the value of my car will cross my mind biggrin

I think you will regret selling the 993 big-time, as it will be impossible to find another good one in a few years time. With your other cars covering all the 'requirements' between them, you have forgotten how good the 993 is at covering *all* of the requirements.

If you don't need the money, plan a trip per year in the 993 - take MrsBelfry to northern France in the springtime (book into a rambling old château), take yourself to the Ardennes in October... the possibilities are endless, and the 993 is the perfect compromise of modernity and rawness (the balance of which you can shift by playing with the suspension).
