Are Porsches beautiful?
Discussion
I think the older ones are beautiful (original 911/356), as in pretty, and the newer ones don't have the aggression of something like a Lambo, but aren't "beautiful" as such. I look at an old 911 on Fuchs and I feel my heart melt a bit, I look at a 991 GT3 and I feel my heart quicken a bit.
Controversially, I think the last "pretty" Porsche was the pre-facelift 986...as soon as the 987 came out with it's squared off wheelarches and more angular vents etc, it heralded a new direction styling wise, but the "prettiness" was gone.
Come on, you can't argue with curves like this...

Porsches are rarely beautiful, but I think their styling has regularly and consistently been far more original, elegant and successful than that of Ferrari or Lamborghini. It is if course a matter of one's taste. The family of 911 cars clearly have a timeless profile. The 928 is an absolute masterpiece of striking and original design. The 944 convertibles are amongst the best looking rag tops ever produced. At their finest they're like well cut suits; understated, not overtly attention seeking, not having to appeal to the latest fashion, wonderfully proportioned, elegant, handsome. In recent years Aston Martin have managed to do all of the above and also make their cars beautiful, but I don't think any other manufacturer has a track record that compares to Porsche.
I think these look beautiful, go well too.

When you look at some of the 911 models (993 in this image), most of the body-work seriously designed/sculpted and calculated according to what is underneath. Very few car brands have managed to do this, I think it's one of the reasons why they are still super popular. (In addition to other benefits like handling, driving and etc...)
This is spot on. The Porsche (911) design philosophy is evolution of the original design and as such really doesn't change as significantly as some of it's peers. Look at other models that have been around for similar periods of time, the Mustang for example has changed drastically (some good, some bad) over the years as has the SL Mercedes models.
When a manufacturer radically changes a design it tends to design to the current trends and this can make cars age quite quickly. Porsche with the 911 have kept the design quite simple with clean lines and I think this makes it stand out against modern cars. With the 991 Porsche have bought in some of the trend for "bling".
This "simpleness" also makes some of the large spoilers etc on the RS cars look cool and not over designed. Something like the SL Black Edition look far too fussy as the design is over complicated before the addition of spoilers etc.
In my opinion you can get away with sticking decals/spoilers on a Porsche because the foundation of the design is very simple.

I agree on E36! Fantastic design, actually currently a clean 318i (swiss import) parked in my building next to f355 and two 986s ! they all look fantastic together, Ill put a photo if I get a chance later..I would put Aston Martin DB9 on this "beautiful or pretty" list too, just in terms of proportions and overall geometry. I never drove a one so not sure if it has good or bad sides comparing to 911, but not having a mid or rear engine, for me already out of the radar

Agree. Design-wise it's a mess.
Beauty isn`t just in the way a car looks it can be about how she drives too. The beauty is in the technological elements that all come together to make an amazing car. Not everyone will see it that way that's OK. You could say that the financial retention is beautiful at least. Gassing Station | Porsche General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
