I love comparing old with new and enjoyed that but shame about the 997 new set up. These would be even better as 10 min youtube comparisons - defo a gap in the market!
PS If a PHer wants to put a 991 turbo S up against a 997.1 turbo for a similar piece let cmoose know! I'd love to see or read about that!!

Cmoose another wonderful, insightful piece; really giving the reader the sense they are there. You seem to have this knack of objectively finding the good and bad from each variant and can translate that into tangible, clear written form, with context and bias expressed in appropriate measures.
I salute yet more trusting donors that make this happen so thanks once again to all Three

+1 a good read. I salute yet more trusting donors that make this happen so thanks once again to all Three
This concept of having to learn the car over a period of time - that is the magic of the mezger GT3s. We are all biased. For me this learning journey is greater in the 996 GT3s.
Previous offer of 6rs vs more modern car (eg 7.2rs) still stands.
Great article.
One thing that struck me about the 991 GT3, having had a good look around one, was what does the enthusiast do about servicing? Seriously, if you wanted to do a DIY interim oil change, how/where do you do it?
Also, for me, one of the really, truly great thrills of owning a proper, impractical 'fun' car is waking the beast up. Having previously owned modified TVRs, that whole rush of adrenaline that comes when the engine fires into life is one of the huge pleasures and, frankly, hearing a 991 GT3 fire-up and settle into idle left me cold. It does not sound bad, but it fails to ignite any real passion for me. that said, I know how glorious they sound up toward the redline, but then having driven Cerberas also know that's not always an easy thing to exploit in the real world.

Being a Porsche novice, I did, honestly worry that this was down to my shortcomings as a driver, rather than a characteristic of the car. I'm pleased to have the latter confirmed!Nice review, you still need to come and drive my spyder :-)
No torque you say in the 997 :-) trail braking on the road means also very high speeds, as I doubt it has low speed push.
I think all these cars in there sweet spot are way way to fast for the road, even though the 997 is not that fast a car vs a turbo, to get it singing is still 3 figure B road speeds to bring it alive.
And for me that's the issue having been there and done that with a GT3 it's a 120 mph car ESP with those ultra long gears, 120mph gets to to about red line in 3rd lol twice the legal limit !
I also notice you say steering feel as I agree a 987 car has better weight and feel to it vs a 997, it's not the tyres or wheel size IMO it's just you drive for a daily a better steering car full stop.
Any track give me a GT3 any road it's a hard choice to choose a GT brand for out right road fun.
Although the owner ship has a fun element to it.
Even my GT4 while it feels slow vs turbo's it's still too fast for the road !
My Spyder still is the best car for me to take down a B road and at night roof off with a clear sky you feel at one with the car and at one with the outside.
Come drive it :-)

some real insights into those cars.
I am not sure it does show much of an insite, it's a personal view and does not talk about gearing and how the engine works at 4k revs and comes alive at 6k which is at crazy speeds, red line a GT3 from 6k to red line and you goto jail !So people still really don't have a clue reading a review (now ever interesting it was) bar it lacks torque and pushes !!! and the sus set up was off.
Trail braking on a public road, well that's a whole new area and pretty much not possible in the UK imo as cars only start to push or under steer at very high speeds, it's not going to under steer on sweapers at 75 mph !! which it should not do if its set up right.
the 991 GT3 was talked on more in this respect that you end up in Jail, but it's the same for any GT car imo.
