I need a car to do my daily 70 mile A road commute in and also general dutys to go along with the wife's mk7 golf.

I don't want to spend more than 5k but would love to spend less and ideally I'd like 30+ mpg more the better and don't want to be servicing it every 6 months.

I've been looking at w211 wagons with the 320 cdi but seemingly you should only buy 56 plate or newer and that's stretching the money or 200k miles+. I'd like comfy bit of poke and something that isn't full of Bork

I like most makes bar Vauxhall I can't stand orange digital displays (stupid I know)

Go for the earlier W211 270/320 the straight 5/6 diesel is more robust & better on fuel than the V6 as well as being easier to maintain with no DPF & an EGR Valve you can clean yourself.

These cars are reliable easy to keep running the main thing is to make sure the gearbox fluid has been changed.

No that was something that mainly affected the AMG models for some reason.

But you can change it if you want to be doubly sure. As I said a gearbox fluid change will make a big difference to how it drives as will a good engine clean (Terraclean etc) they'll just run & run as long as you look after them.

Out of the list above the Black 320 would be my first pick followed by the Black 270 estate & finally the Cubanite Silver 270.

I bought a 2007 merc c220cdi estate auto for £1,700.

It had 195k miles on it, but it runs just fine.

Don't forget about the SBC brake issue on the 211. Worst case you are looking at a £500 part plus labour.

I recently bought a W211 E320 and I am chuffed to bits with it.

It shifts (within reason) when you want it to and is mega comfy. Plus they wear their miles so well. I paid a little over £4k for mine with 102k on the clock and a shed load of service history etc. Plus a bonus of no rust haha

Oh and in terms of MPG, I see 50mpg no problem on a steady run and 30 or just under round town. The current average is showing as 44mpg.

With a bit of haggling:

All very comfortable commuting cars, all should nudge 40mpg, you'll get a younger and lower mileage car for your money than a £5k E-Class. Not exactly glamorous though.

Just a thought OP, but given you haven't specified any need for number of doors, seats, etc. would a BMW E46 Compact work for you?

I have had a 325ti Compact for 18 months and it is showing 34.4mpg on the OBC!

You could get one for less than 50% of your budget, and they are great fun when you get clear of traffic!

Or you could go nearer to your maximum and find a 130i or 330i - there probably won't ever be any naturally-aspirated RWD straight 6 petrols in the future!

Anyway I hope you find something you like! thumbup

Good luck they're a rare car, again check that the gearbox oil has been changed.

Must admit I'm confused as to specs is it a sport or a sport pack and what it actually entails !
