Hi,

I have been told that the 7th service requires change of the spark plugs.

The car has done 35,000 miles. Half the amount suggested of the 70,000miles / 7th Service.

I have seen conflicting views here on whether to do the spark plugs or not...so am sparking up debate again!

I would be grateful for your thoughts.

Thanks,
R

Hi Ross. My v12v is due it's 7th service this year and when I phoned my AM dealer was told that the factory have dropped the time Or mileage criteria for spark plug change.... To just mileage only. On the stipulation that there's no mechanical issues, such as a misfire.
So the service cost that I budgeted for has now reduced by £600-700!
Of course, you can still opt for the change anyway if you have concerns.

As the car will have Platinum plugs, they are fine for at least 50,000 miles and replacing due to age is pointless. They are assuming a nominal 10k miles per year, so they should have 70k miles by now.

As they have not, then unless you really want to waste money, then dont bother.

The only really age related maintenance will be the brake fluid and coolant which have a limited "shelf" life.

Thanks very much for the clear answers Mako and 8Tech.

That sums things up for me. No point changing the plugs.

My 2006 was due the spark plug service last year, but again as there were no actual 'mechanical' reason to change them, it was postponed. Like previous post said, if there's a problem with them, you know about it.

Just resurrecting this thread. My V12V is due it's 7 year service and I've been advised to change the spark plugs. Is the current thought it's not worth spending the £800 do it? The car has 16k miles and runs perfectly. Any advice please!

If you want to do it as preventative maintenance and to have a 'perfect' maintenance log, go for it. But the plugs last a whole lot longer than 16k miles and, so long as the car is driven on a somewhat regular basis, there's no reason for them to need to be changed with so few miles on them. That's assuming everything is okay with your car, engine, etc.

I generally drive it at least every 2 weeks. She runs perfectly so it seems wasteful to spend £800 on something that's not required. It'd be a different story if it was deemed a mandatory service item.

Please read my post above - it states the official line from the factory. I didn't have mine changed as it is not necessary unless you have a firing issue!

Thanks Mako. Just making sure nothing had changed since then. £800 saved!
