I'm currently trying to avoid buying a 911 to go with my 981. I would be happy with a 996 but I'm not sure about 4wd and the 3.4 is little. Budget creep is very easy when looking at 911. The 3.6 is only a little more and then you're into 997 3.6 territory and then 3.8 ...
And then you want to avoid bore scoring etc and BOOM! I've just bought a GT3. (That's what happened to me hehe )
It was a similar line of thinking, plus not wanting our weather to stop me enjoying the car on the odd occasions I had the time to use it, which put me in a turbo.

I'm quite suprized you are thinking of 911? how is 981? In terms of daily driver, I would be curious to know.. It has also been my radar, I thought it was a perfect daily driver, but having 986 now more than 4 years, kind of gearing towards 4 seaters

My 981 2.7 is my DD. Cheap to insure and run (average 36.5 mpg over last 10k miles) and I fret a little when we go out in my wife's '62 A3 2.0Tdi 140 Sportback. But that Audi, to me, is the pinnacle of the "other car" if you have to have one, and most wives do. Fun to drive, nippy, 60+ mpg and does everything we need it too. Having said that, she wants to be "up high" now, so looking at small SUV/Crossovers. Shame.

But back to the subject... if I were a multi millionaire I'd have a line up of vehicles to choose from perhaps and not fret about depreciation and the cost of them all just sitting there.

We had a third car once, a mint E30 325i cab, which did 750 miles in a year and I couldn't cope with it just sitting there in the garage. Never again.

Anyone not driving their pride and joy in preference to something less exciting is letting their head rule their heart. If you must do that, maybe you're in over your head financially and can't hack the depreciation and costs of running it (into the ground)?

To me the driving joy outweighs the pence per mile.

I wasn't planning to buy a 981 - it just happened. I was attracted by the newer engine. I didn't do any research other than this. Now that I have it I do like it. I am still undecided about the PDK and I am missing some of the steering feel I loved about my other Porsches. I now know that the later 987 has the same engine so that is probably a better bet. I wish I'd got one of them - maybe. Anyway rather than think about selling the 981 I am instead thinking about a companion. I dont drive round flat out and I am no Nigel Mansell. What I liked about my other Porsches is even if you are just pootling around at 2 tenths you can feel whats going on. That isn't really happening as well as I remember in the 981. The 20 inch tyres do provide more chatter which you feel in your bum and your whole body. With the 19 inch Winter setup it was a lot less so.

Interesting to hear. I did test drive 2.7 981 in 2013 summer. Almost put a deposit there and left all my savings but thanks to ex-girl friend she dragged me out of the OPC biggrin I really liked the car, it was super-modern and had most of the fun of 986 to be honest. Did you have any issues apart from usual maintenance? My only worry not to go for 981 or 718, they are just too new and not really trusting on Porsche, in case if there is a chronic problem with them.(I hope not) We have almost seen any nightmare could happen with 996 so any purchasing action I would be well-prepared (so to speak!)

I have a Porsche because I enjoy it. I only enjoy it when it is doing what it was made for. I can appreciate that it could of been made to look good. And it does this well. But why would I drive around in a different car. I would need a good reason. So I drive my van [bmw touring] when I am going mountain biking. Maybe if I got a 911 I could get a bike rack - problem solved.

How far did you drive it?

When I bought mine it was sold privately. I only drove it about 1 mile or so. I had already decided I wanted it so I was just checking it worked basically.

I think your ex-girl friend did you a disservice - I hope she did other things to make up for it. If you want one then go get one.

I drove about 20 mins in Chiswick. Not sure about the mileage though, did both motorway and local area. The car was fantastic, I just had the personal experience of unreliability on long term as I tend to keep a car as long as possible! and some friends had basic issues with 987.2 and 991 back in the time so the ex-lady was reluctant not to hear any depressing stories about another car issue I guess! smile

981 looks and sounds really reliable to be honest, it might be my option again but 996 c4 or turbo being a 4 seater also looks more appealing!

Looks beautiful. I would ask more details about "cylinder head upgrade"?

+ Looks like cooling system has not been renewed? With that age, I think it might definitely need new set of radiators, coolant tank + I would assume you might need new CATs (Catalytic converters). There might be more, but these are the first crucial things coming to my mind so far.

(I do not want to scare you, I'm also looking at 996 or 997 currently)

By the way, this one is quite interesting... wink

It's been discussed a bit on 911uk. On the face of it seems a nice car, great spec, the right bits done recently.

The jury's still out on whether to mess with an otherwise ok ims bearing, and yellow is likely to divide opinion, but on the face of it it's a great car at a very good price.

Aerokitted manual 996s with M030, PSE and sports seats generally sold quite quickly last year. C4 doesn't seems to make much difference. At the price I think it's increasingly good value. Last year I would have expected it to sell at £16-18k. As a useable Porsche, with caveats around IMS bearing (despite being replaced) and running costs it's a pretty good bet if yellow is your thing. Mine is a very similar spec and even though I eat sandwiches for lunch I would say it is very useable, M030 and all. Worth noting it's an early C4 with cable bonnet and engine lid release (if it interests you).

You are so right! a bit of research, here we go I found the previous list

http://www.odaviscars.co.uk/stockdetails.asp?Stock...

Looks like, its been £14k, just over 29k miles..now with 39k its 5k GBP more!. I wonder why they have sold it after 10k? It sounds & looks like a fantastic car.

I think probably going for C4 with high miles but similar price is much of a fun gamble than going for this. There are also a few 997's C2's around with similar 20k price range so a bit of hard call. I think we are still on summer vibes too, prices might really just adjust mid august i guess or early september.

I prefer buying them a little worn. That why I am less likely to want to tuck it away and more likely to use it and abuse it.
