I collected my car back from the garage and they mentioned one of the ignition coils were cracked. When he showed me the black plastic casing had split slightly.

He mentioned the car will eventually misfire but decision to replace them was down to me.

I wasn't sure whether I could keep driving for now and replace them in a couple of months or whether they should be done ASAP.

thoughts? he mentioned new updated coil packs were released which were tougher than the originals.

They are too cheap to leave broken.

Would replace all of them or just those which are broken?

I just did them as they were spotted. Can be a few at a time.

They certainly won't get better and will misfire more and more in the wet (as they're sat right behind/beside the rear wheels...).

Change them all for about £140.

I was quoted £40 per coil.

to replace all plus fitting was £390.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking but the Technician said the new coils were updated and worth replacing all together.

Not heard that about new design ones being better. Am sure I read somewhere it's the same coil packs which fail on most cars as certain positions are more exposed to the elements / experience higher temperatures than other coil packs on the car so just replace the ones you need to.

I expect they have made changes to the part. These have been cracking since the 996 and it's hard to believe the updated ones will not go the same way.

Hi Alex, the £40/ coils are genuine dealer ones, you also have to fit 3mm spacers behind the protective shield, as the new ones are made by Borg Warner, and will rub on it, due to size.

There are Beru ones from Eurocarparts, also of same dimensions that are £27.00 each and them come with the new longer bolts in the box, Porsche sell bolts separate.

I remember when I took my 997 to Exeter OPC few years back, they told me they'd fitted new (improved) coils under warranty due to some of the originals having cracked.

This was a few yeas ago though!

As above, for the same price as a few tanks of fuel get them changed. They pick up all the wet and crud from under the car.
