As the thread name suggests, I am very excited about the new (rumoured but semi-confirmed) mid-engined 960, I think amongst the the people in the know there is a lot of underground "activity" and Buzz surrounding it.

This has been rumoured for so long I'd put it in the wishful thinking category!

Seem to remember Autocar had a render of it a few years ago.

I'd love them to make it but it would split the Cayman/911 customer base too much if it was a production car and wouldn't be economically viable if it was a ltd edition I suspect.

Not at £200k it won't!

apparently some youtube motoring stars "saw the NDA agreemant" for the car., also other brands creating mid-engined vehicles (corvette , Aston martin, even AUDI although thats a far fetched one) , so I am guessing the "mid engine" craze is the new thing amongst those manufacturers.

apparently the picture in this Autosport story from 2 yrs ago....is a fair representation of FeFi...

http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/porsche...

and that it will arrive in 2017...not a limited edition

source: a witness to product briefing materials...

colour me intrigued...tempted...hopeful.

Had to happen. Watching the 911's getting hammered at Le Mans this year was a sad sight...

Think you will find the BOP, (Balance of Performance) more equal for 17

I've heard this too, official signoff from up on high this week.

Will use the new 4.0tt V8 from the new Panamera Turbo to very good effect.

The racing version of this has been talked about by those in the know for a fair while now. Mid-engined, V8 and turbos is a direct response to the 488. Will be interesting to see what the production version looks like.

Agree that it would be amazing to have a bespoke flat-8, but you an I both know that the chances of that are about the same as a Tesla achieving it's claimed range. They aren't even going for bespoke engines in the GT cars any more.

I'm sure they can spice up the Panamera's engine a little, give it more 'zing'.

I suppose this sounds the death knell for any hope of a new 928 front engined GT too, not that there was much of that.

You need to get that telegram sent to Stuttgart pronto, before they commit to this terrible mistake!

As you say, more of these appearing is inevitable.

If they'd just sort out an attainable equivalent of the 911R to go alongside it...

Maybe they should have acquired the Ruf V8 from the RGT8 to keep Mr. Moose happy. wink

The Internet said:
... the dry sumped 4 valve per cylinder V8 has a 4.5liter displacement and produces a very good 542bhp at 8,500rpm and 369lb/ft (500Nm) of torque at 5,400rpm

True. I guess that as that genre of car becomes more everyday-usable the opportunities to really wind out a screamer are fairly low compared to the times that a big slug of turbo torque is useful. Against an M140i at the traffic lights on the A406 near Muswell Hill, for example.

C'mon moose, you know as well as I do the reasons! That RUF unit isn't being made in the thousands, doing hundreds of thousands of miles and pretty much each one is pampered and fettled by them its whole life.

I absolutely wish that Porsche would build a bespoke engine for this, but you know deep down that it's never going to happen.

Even got the price list for the Ruf when I looked at buying a 991 RS when they were launched - manual transmission and high reving 8 cylinder engine. Whats not to like - turns out the price was an issue for me. Lovely though, would have one in a heartbeat if I had the money

As a bit of a thread resurrection does anyone think the 2017 911 RSR GT race car is a prelude to the fabled mid-engined 9xx becoming a production car?
