911R - totally agree, not defending the practise at all, OPCs are following the letter not the spirit of the law just because they would rather make the premiums rather the the customer.

Which also leads to a huge conflict of interest as to who gets the allocation

OPC can't sell new cars over list, can sell second hand over list, think it's always been this way
Not what I was told... I was buying a used Boxster back in 98 and was told that the maximum price they could charge me was the list price, as that had been agreed with Porsche GB.

In any case, it's really easy to turn a new car into a used car. Register to a family member and take it for a few spins and you have one slightly used vehicle.

Porsche Mayfair did that with a silver GT3 RS with comfort seats (?). They said is belonged to a customer who had changed his mind - hmmm. A friend bought it for a hefty premium but sold it on because he got cold feet and took a smaller loss when doing so. I think 5 - 10k is about the right premium these days - not more. But then again, this is one of the first Porsche's ever (4.0 and R apart) that has never traded below its launch price. I have done 6000 miles in mine and it is superb. I would not change it for an "R". I think they are hyped and with 991 being produced premiums will come down once supply meets demand. The 4.0 remains the rare beast among recent Porsche incarnations for all the right reasons.

What you were told back in 1998? Things have moved on a little since then!

Obviously... that was my point!

Listen, I am not whining about it, I think we've done it to death on this thread now and I understand it fully from a business perspective, it just caught me by surprise. I hadn't realised that what I was told was no longer the case, but then I've been buying 997 turbos and cayennes, and not the really exotic cars. When you're used to depreciation paying well above list seems strange!

Agreed. What's wrong with plain White with Green striping and Silver wheels - it just looks right!

Not sure if the rules for 'flipping' brand new cars are the same in the US as UK. I see the 911R for sale is in the US.

We know it against the law for a dealer in the UK to charge above list price for a brand new car. I don't think its against the law in the US. I was pretty interested on the GT86/BRZ twins when they were launched and followed a few forums. Lots of disgruntled Yanks on them at the time the car was launched as US dealers (particularly Subaru) were charging over list price for early cars as demand was way out stripping supply.
