Having driven the 718 I can't praise it enough as a turbo. I've owned a lot of 4 pot Porsche cars including the 944 turbo. The 718 is a great car. A manual turbo is very interesting and challenging to drive properly so I don't understand why the so called purists don't seem to like it. Sounds good or bad? That is a subjective thing like manual or PDK. Would I swap my CGTS for one, no but it's still a great car and those that do buy one won't be disappointed.

Genuine question, do you mean that the 718 would be simply more effective on a twisty road or do you think it is more satisfating, engaging and interesting to drive on the same twisty road? I was impressed by the 981 Cayman S effectiveness on one of my favourite road but I would still take a 991 for the wider range of reaction and different feedbacks, still more similar to older 911s I know best despite the outside dimensions were closer to current Caymans.
I'm thinking a 718S and from an effectiveness perspective. It's not like a Turbo S in terms of acceleration but it's effective and pretty refined. I think you'd be shopping a base 991, not an S unless on higher mileage. Agree with your points, at this level, 991 will offer a bit more stimulation.

Engine/engine sound is a big aspect for me. I have not driven the 718 with a PSE but imagine they'll go the route of the 981 GTS with silly amounts of easily provoked 'farting' which makes you look like a prat.

Know it's not an option but 997 GTS would be my preference in this dilemma.

Its quite funny as at the moment I am looking for a 991 GTS and have been reading the brochure...

To quote from Porsche 'High revs, Earthly sound, Immediate response, Sports car qualities since 1963... Drive....'

Now it should read..... 'Low revs, more pops than a 5 year olds birthday party, sports car qualities lost in the wake of emissions legislation.... Buy something else!

Bit harsh maybe but my god the pops and bangs do my head in and the 991 S has soon much lag its not funny.

I did just that 2 months ago.

Have not looked back.

Rang my friendly local Porsche Centre, was quoted December/January delivery for 718 Cayman S, stumbled across 997 GTS on their website and bought it over the phone. Love it.

Sounds good. I'm thinking about adding one in to the garage as well. Think they're excellent value.

Agreed, or a 981S with the right bits.

Without wishing to sound like a tttish politician, I actually think OP is asking the wrong question.

Btw I hate it when people say that to me, so I apologise.

Yup, considering you can get a 981 GTS or S still pretty new and holding value well so far, its a no brainer. Maybe 981 Cayman or 991 is the right question?

Thanks.

Obviously it depends on proposed use as to whether a 5 year old car is a better day to day proposition than a brand new one, it's not going to be a successful recipe for everyone... Ironically, the previous owner of my car traded it in for a 981 GTS Cayman...

I didn't do my 718S Cayman test drive on a twisty road but the power delivery did remind me a little of my '62 TTS. It was the slight delay when applying power, the slight over-run when lifting off, which spoilt the drive in the TTS (apart from the 4WD uncertainty).

I only experienced a little power-on lag in the 718S, but enough to make me think that on a twisty road, when you're trying to enjoy smoothly navigating the bends, it may be enough to unsettle your pleasure. N/A power delivery is easier to predict.
