3.8 RS vs current 991s (GT cars)
Discussion
I bought a 991gt3 - fantastically fast, supremely competent. I have no doubt in my mind that my mum could do a sub 10min lap of the 'ring in it. It really is that easy to exploit the power and potential.
I traded up to a 997.2 RS. It is all subjective but for me the RS is the better car, feels better built, whether it's just because it's the RS it feels more special all of the time.
You can take a cable car to the top of a mountain or you can climb it... one is easy, the other is a challenge.
Which route you take is down to you.

Have 997.2RS and had 991GT3. Also driven 991RS.
The 991 GT cars are superb, flattering and pure track weapons, particularly the RS. Not a huge amount of difference between the 991 GT3 and 991RS unless at warp speed on a track, where the 91RS shows through. Both are mullered by the Mac LT on track.
The 997RS is a totally different feel. notchy change, massive feedback and bobs and weaves is a manner the 991 series can only dream about. The 991RS will be quicker, if thats your goal.
Track time trial, 991 series.
Track fun, raw feel, feedback, interaction the 997RS.
Alps trip, 997RS simply because of the stick shift.
A- Roads. Unless you live near and or track regularly, neither. Too quick, too big, too garish. Cannot unlock either. You will go to jail.

Unfortunately my driving experience in 997 and 991 GT 911s is not huge, on track I drove only once 997.1 GT3 back in 2010 while on the road I drove 997.1 GT3, 997.1 and 997.2 RS and 991 GT3. It may sounds obvious but it took me 1 minute to understand how less raw the driving experience of the 991 GT3 feels on the road. The transmission plays a big role but also steering and front seemed more diluited than in previous 997s. Yet I have no doubt I would be much quicker on a track with the 991, I would like to try one on track, I see enormous potential and probably even more in the 991RS.
Personally, considering that I at the moment I would be using a GT 911 primarly on the road and in weekend only I would be looking at a 997 RS. Actually one of my regrets is not having bought a green 997.1 RS a friend was selling back in 2009. At the time I needed a car to be used almost on daily basis and I ended up buying a 997 4S but it was a mistake.

this always throws up some interesting comments, when comparing these types of cars.
I've owned and/or driven most of the range (I think !) over the years, with the exception of the 91RS (I have a 991GT3 currently)
I think it really comes down to what you want, and what you want to do with the car.
If I wanted the most rewarding A road drive, I'd go for my old 996.1 GT3CS - well sorted, and just the right balance of power / grip / feedback.
However, for my current use, the 991GT3 is supreme - it's a daily driver that has seen some track action and the odd A/B road blast. The PDK works perfectly on the car for the balance of these roles. I don't really enjoy the A/B road blast bit any more - too worried about losing my license ! that and the roads are so bloody congested around me most of the time.
Anyway, that's just my observations !
In an ideal world, I'd still have my old 996GT3, and my current 991GT3 ! (and the panamera turbo, and the cayenne turbo...)

Just plain greedy (but would cover most eventualities I'd imagine ! ! )I've owned and/or driven most of the range (I think !) over the years, with the exception of the 91RS (I have a 991GT3 currently)

Back on topic I would take the 997.2RS over any 991gt3 even a 997.2gt3 would still be my 1st choice but until we know what the 991.2 gt3 is all about so might be worth waiting !
Whether it comes with a manual gearbox or not, imo anyone expecting the 991.2 gt3 to be in any way a reset back to the 7gt3 in 'feel' is going to be in for a big surprise. The gt4 (or any 9x1 car gt3 inclusive) was for me a very very long way from the 7gt3 nevermind 6gt3sGassing Station | Porsche General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
