Henry Catchpole in sharkwerks porsche GT4
Discussion
There has been an R&P for the gear box available for a while. The issue is that its not reliable and AFAIK no one has put the $$$$ in to coming up with a solution that is.
The trackside chatter was that it was good for a race and nothing more. Not really a cost effective solution even in that environment let alone a road car. R&P was ~$3k last I heard.
The market is just not there for the ROI on the R&P from what I can see - and race politics (Pre GT4 coming on to the market) seemed to crush what might have been the one avenue where the R&D could have been raised.
Maybe the GT4 market will change that. Reality usually bites though when it comes to moving things off of a forum and into the car.
There are good gear sets for these boxes - race proven and reliable and covering 3-6 - as well as proper LSD's. Again proven units. 2nd is SNAFU same as it is on the street GT3 boxes. 2nd is fixed on the mainshaft.
So an owner definitely has options if they are so inclined.

So there's the answer for Sharkwerks not changing 2nd gear and making 3/4/5 closer? So an owner definitely has options if they are so inclined.
I assume so.
While the street GT3 does have an option to utilise the motorsport main shaft with a taller 1st gear and a removable 2nd gear - albeit at an incredibly high price - to replace their fixed main shaft, there is no corresponding option available for the Cayman as far as I have heard.

I thought gt gears had suggested swapping the 2.7 981 gearbox so as to get the shorter 2nd gear attached to the mainshaft as a possible if expensive fix? While the street GT3 does have an option to utilise the motorsport main shaft with a taller 1st gear and a removable 2nd gear - albeit at an incredibly high price - to replace their fixed main shaft, there is no corresponding option available for the Cayman as far as I have heard.
Such an approach would not provide a corresponding alternative to a main shaft with a removable 2nd gear though. It would just give an alternative main shaft and fixed gear combo.
The general point was that even if one commits to changing gear ratios - and realistically this is already a step way beyond what most all owners will do (theres almost no one puts up on this stuff) - you cant just swap 2nd gear out like you can the others. This renders mostly imperfect solutions.
