996 GT3 to 997 GT3
Discussion
Has anyone gone from a 996 GT3 to a 997.1 GT3? and if so would you recommend the change.
I've currently got a 2005 996 GT3 with pretty much the ideal spec of buckets and 1/2 cage, lowish millage (35k) and full OPC history, recently I've been thinking about a change, looked at Ferrari's and lambo's but think I'd end up getting fed up with the running costs.
I'm tempted to look at a change to a 997 GT3, theres a few nice looking cars for sale although I think within my price range I'd probably end up with a higher millage car, like the look of the clubsport at 911 virgin at the moment.
Has anyone else made the move from a 996 to 997 and if so would your recommend it?

It was the 52k mile car that caught my eye.
I've got no real reason to sell the 996, having owned it for around 5 years I know it's a good car and I know I'd kick myself if I bought a questionable 997.
I guess I'm a bit board in the winter and looking for things to do, then immediately start looking at the classifieds. last week I'd pretty much decided that a 996 GT3 Cup car was a sensible idea.

My contemporaneous comparison of a 996.1 GT3 and 997.1 GT3 (from the perspective of owning a 996.1 GT3).

Good to hear my winter issues are shared by others. If a Cup car swap make some sense, does a R / RS / RSR swap make even more sense?I've got no real reason to sell the 996, having owned it for around 5 years I know it's a good car and I know I'd kick myself if I bought a questionable 997.

I made the switch from a 996.2 GT3 comfort version with buckets to a 997.1 GT3 clubsport. I remember reading that the 996 is a better drivers car, more raw etc. etc.
However for this very average driver the switch to a 997 has been great. It looks beautiful. Pressing the suspension and sport buttons gives me a great drive at any speed.

there is a road registered 996 Cup car for sale in Germany, which I look at from time to time - seems like it could be a lot of fun I've got no real reason to sell the 996, having owned it for around 5 years I know it's a good car and I know I'd kick myself if I bought a questionable 997.

When you say cage, it that an aftermarket one or is the car an OE club sport spec?I've currently got a 2005 996 GT3 with pretty much the ideal spec of buckets and 1/2 cage, lowish millage (35k) and full OPC history, recently I've been thinking about a change, looked at Ferrari's and lambo's but think I'd end up getting fed up with the running costs.

I made the swap from 996.2 to 997.1 and not looked back
I canvassed lots of opinions at the time and it was very much in the balance - especially as the 996 was a full spec CS and the 997 is a comfort (with buckets)
The 996 was more raw than the 997, but I always felt it had the capacity to wipe me out - it exhibited the 911 traits a bit more than the 997 with a weavey nose etc - it bit me once at oulton on the RS track day in 2014 and put me in the gravel and yes, it was properly set up etc.
The 997 is more manageable but less lively - it's a lot more manageable and predictable, but quicker too - you can live with it more as a daily. It's also in my opinion a nicer looking car - as a child of the 80's - I've never been one for narrow bottomed 911's.
I think if you're a proper driver, you'all find the 996 more enjoyable to wring the last few tenths out of, but if you're a mere mortal, you'all find the 997 more rewarding.
Ignore the b*****ks about low down torque, refreshes yarda yada - both are perfectly useable, cars which you don't have to drive at 10/tenths to enjoy - neither will do you wrong!!

I wonder has the OP considered a Cayman R ? Apparently they're quicker/better geared, not to mention a better drivers car than both iterations of the GT3 being discussed, and no need for a £10k refresh anytime soon either

Cayman R needs no refreshes. Ever. I wonder has the OP considered a Cayman R ? Apparently they're quicker/better geared, not to mention a better drivers car than both iterations of the GT3 being discussed, and no need for a £10k refresh anytime soon either
I think that in the spectrum of sports cars all the 996/997 GT3s are in the same close range; differences which are discussed on motorhead forums in great detail are pretty minor differences in reality, which means that we're talking about, say, the difference between 96 and 97 of a spectrum of 0-100.
