I have a diesel Macan and wondered the same before I specced it. I have a super hifi at home and wouldn't listen to it with an engine running in the background. I therefore plumped for the standard system and it's perfectly adequate. Save yourself the £800.
I,ve had my extended demo Macan for 3 months now, but getting my 991 back today. I,ve put a deposit on a DS, so well done Porsche. But the longer I,ve had it and after trying aGts also, I realise many of the expensive options you don't need. Especially if for me it's a proper daily driver, I'm sticking with 21', comfort seats, heated seat and wheel, black detailing and met black paint, + navigation obviously, everything else I see as pointless, and what a bargain of a car when you do that.

Never liked the Bose system in any of the 911s I have had,but think the Macan (less engine/external noises) maybe more suitable to benefit from it.The wife has it in her cayenne and it's decent but I can't compare it to the standard set up,
Had Bose in an '09 997.2 C4S, and wondered what all the fuss was about. I'd heard much better systems than that, and wondered why Porsche insist on sticking with Bose for their ICE upgrade option.

The standard setup is fine in my 12 plate Cayenne.

I had a Harman Becker in my old 996 and it was superb. I agree the Bose isn't great in a 911 but in a Cayenne with a bigger cabin and less road noise I think it's a decent upgrade.

I've just taken delivery of a Macan GTS with Bose. I've had Bose twice previously in a 2001 (new at the time) Boxster and a 2012 Audi A6. Having been rather disappointed with both of those, the Bose in the GTS is a pleasant surprise, it is actually not bad. I can't compare it against the standard system and I'm still playing with it, but I would agree that you definitely need to tick the 'linear' box before doing anything. I'm still playing with surround on and off.

I recently traded my Macan SD which had Bose for a new Macan with Burmester. The Burmester sounds very good but not much of a step up over Bose which I thought was a very decent system/upgrade. Of course always best to demo both systems before you buy which I did not do with the Burmester. For the cost of Burmester I expected to be totally blown away by it, but unfortunately not the case. Bang for buck I would go Bose all day long, also it seemed to need less adjustment, i.e. Sometimes when a new song comes on with Burmester there is too much bass or treble, the Bose seemed to be less tempramental like that.

Please excuse me for asking, but have you selected the 'burmester' option within the PCM?

The reason i ask is i have a 991.1TTS with it and didnt realise you had to select it on to get the full effect.
Albeit in a car with as much road noise as this, the Bose would have been better in the 991 and burmester in the macan hehe

Yes, I've tried all the various Burmester settings within the PCM. Don't get me wrong it does sound very good, just not blown away by it which I would expect for the cost. All subjective, as advice I would just try both the Bose and Burmester before buying to anybody specifying a car so you can make up your own mind.
