I've been thinking about this. I run a 997.1 C2 as a daily and if I were to buy another car, I'd have a fair chunk of fixed costs associated with it. A 10k commuting car would have say £250 general upkeep per year, £500 insurance, £200 VED, washing costs etc and depreciation on top. It will probably give me at least double miles per gallon.
All in all, I think I would save maybe £1000-£1500 a year in fuel costs but it would cost me towards £1000, maybe more, to run it. So no real saving. So might as well continue with 997 as daily.
If my commute were 100 miles round trip, obviously a second car would make much more sense. But at 100 miles per week with other regular 200+ mile trips for business, I think I will continue with the 997 for the moment as a single car.

1.6 Golf TDi cost £20k 2011 but with 100% 1st yr WDA reduced tax bill by £8k, insurance £280, VED £20, lifetime average over 60 mpg so that's say 9p per mile 80k miles ( 40 ml per day) Running costs - 3 yrs free service, 1 service since 4 tyres, pads and discs £1k, £14.99 mirror of eBay ditto £39.99 fuel filler flap
Probably cost over £2k to fix paint and public car park dings
It's as fast as Maclaren P1 @ commute
X trail for bikes, dogs, trailer
911, MX5, motorbikes for fun

I'm amazed at how many folk run a daily that guzzle more gas than their Porsche weekender!
Mazda 6 diesel tourer for me...averages 42 mpg...£30 a year road tax...and carries all my fishing tackle with ease.
The cost of fuel is the least of my worries against depreciation, damage, wear and tear etc... We only do 12k a year... Buying a diesel is totally lost on me, and they sound ste!Mazda 6 diesel tourer for me...averages 42 mpg...£30 a year road tax...and carries all my fishing tackle with ease.

but you could have charged £34k to your business for 80k miles.
I think the different views are all very interesting, I agree not using a porsxhe because you are worried about resale value is a bit silly, like somebody else said on here, you don't have a hot girlfriend and not have sexy with her much to preserve for her next partner.
But then you don't want to wear your Sunday best every day, and the Sunday best is simply not appropriate for some things. Also change is nice whatever the car, and for sure a day or two in another car makes the porsche feel great!
A 100 mile daily I think is slightly too much for a Porsche 5 days a week, it can do it fine, but there are better options and shame to be driving it and not loving it....

If you have a hot wife you don't give her a job block paving driveways because she's there and it's 'cheaper" than paying someone else. But then you don't want to wear your Sunday best every day, and the Sunday best is simply not appropriate for some things. I'm having the same thoughts. I run a Cayenne Diesel as the family daily driver, but it only does about 7000 miles a year. That means that in 3 years of ownership, I will have saved around £2000 running a Diesel instead of a petrol Cayenne. Currently, the Diesel has stupidly strong residuals, which means I've probably also saved a load of depreciation (the scary component of the running costs for certain), but the diesel residual climate seems to be turning, especially if many cities ban private diesels or levy a hefty emissions charge. Next time I think I'll buy something with a modern petrol turbo v6 or v8 that will still do 20-25mpg while sounding nice...Oh, the weekend car is a 996 Turbo S, plus a mk1 MX5 for cheap thrills :-)
I opted for my practical Snotter = Seat Ibiza FR 1.4TSI
48mpg dd achieved
140bhp, sub 8sec 0-60, 130+; handling is a bit uninspiring/meh, you light the front tyres up quite easily
All the basic toys needed for 20mile eachway dd(DAB, BT, voice, Nav, leather/Alcantara seats, cruise etc etc. Reasonably quiet and comfortable
5 door = reasonably practical space wise, fits 4 adults easily without contortions.
Tax = f'all really, Insurance = low for an old dude.
Reasonable size and visibility for parking, manoeuvres, dashcam/speedtrap fitted
Looks = ok (imo, nice alloys, paint colour etc)
Don't really give a monkey's if I curb it, dent it, scratch it
v reliable currently and under warranty. Cheap to but in the first place. reasonable residuals
Will knock it out after two years use.
Uninspiring but an ok compromise in all areas for me - imo so far.
Access to the missus Cay S for once in a while dd and frustration bashing blast
991.2 TTS tucked up on trickle until the conditions improve, then used for once in a while dd when the weathers nice.
