At a bit of a crossroads with my 986...half tempted to sell it next year and go down the 996 route (so I can introduce my little'un to the joys or Porsche) or I might just keep it. Either way, I think it will be worth getting my wheels refurbed.

Looking for a competent local(ish) firm who can do the job and tick these boxes...

-No hurry, the car can sit on axle stands in the garage

-Comfortable doing GT3 style SportDesign split rims

-Not that fussed about the "correct" diamond cut rim as I think I prefer all painted

-Needs to last, however the car is kept garaged generally and although it's good to go all year I don't make a habit of driving it in really nasty winter weather

-Good value, I don't want to pay absolute top dollar in case I do sell the car

I've heard good things about Exel, but to be honest as I'm in no hurry, and I can just chuck the wheels in the back of the Defender and take them to the refurb place, there's no point in me paying the convenience premium.

Any ideas or recommendations?

Thanks

I got my 996 wheels returned by PCT Porsche just outside Coventry. They sent them off to a specialist wheels place that did it properly, full strip back and repaint. From memory the cost was something like £90 + VAT per wheel. I don't have the name of the specialist they used unfortunately.

Pristine in Milton Keynes have done a good job for me on an Aston and a Porsche.

Another vote for Pristine (and the end result will look factory original or better)

Reinventing the wheel in Tewkesbury are very good as their link with Bently dealerships testifies....

Have used them for my 997 turbo previously and the service/cost was excellent.

Great, thanks, I'll give Pristine a try.

I know the guys at PCT and they do a great job servicing my car, but I see zero value in essentially taking the wheels to a dealer for them to add margin and hand them over to the refurbishers. I'd rather just go direct.

Thanks again!

Cost was indeed excellent, the experience/service less so. But then the two rarely make good bedpartners IME.

Guys, any experience with Alloy WHeel Refurbishment UK in Coventry?

They are a LOT cheaper than Pristine...but at the end of the day it's a 15 year old 986 that does a few thousand summer miles a year...

I was extremely pleased with the service from Chris at Excel Wheels. Mobile service with a loan set, if required, to keep your car on the move, is a very high level of service. Good end results IME.

A LOT cheaper until the laquer starts to turn milky and/or the spider's webs begin to appear ....

I wouldn't use anyone else.

Top quality job, they check each wheel is fully straight before refurb and use their straightening machine if they are not.

Really pleased with the work they did for me and a great price.

I disagree, I've found this guy a real pain in the ass to deal with! Seems like you have to dance to his tune given the apparent demand he seems to pick up. Been trying to offer up a 4 wheels from a 997.2 for refurb since the turn of the year, chased him 3 times 'just catching up' is the response....not bothering again.

Thanks for the suggestions, also useful here...

Amazed Excel gets such good reviews too. So either many individuals standards aren't that high "it's round, silver and shiny (ish) so it's ok" or the convenience of his service outweighs the questionable quality.
They did a set of wheels on my car, the finish was poor and the quality of the laquer hopeless. When I complained I spent nearly an hour on the phone arguing (going round and round in circles actually) and was told that I should have informed him of the standard of finish I was expecting, and had they known my expectations they'd have had them "hand painted" rolleyes

No such issues with Pristine at Woburn Sands I'm glad to say

Excel, gross misnomer.

Won't be using Exel wheels again either. After having 2 sets of wheels refurbished we found that the tyre valves on both sets had become cracked and perished after 2 years. I've tried to contact him to let him know but he never replies to my messages. This is disappointing as ii would consider it a safety issue. Prior to finding this issue I had tried to contact him about a minor repair to a wheel but he never responds to my messages. Will not use or recommend again.

I used them to refurb a set of badly damaged '70s Cosmics last year, came up as good as new - recommended.

Bit of an update. I happened to speak to my local tyre place who firstly beat Black Circles on a quote for two new front tyres, and secondly said "leave it to us..." and got me a trade deal from Pristine.

Dropped in to the tyre place this evening to see how things are looking...they are in the middle of rebuilding the split rims and fitting the tyres, but bloody hell they do look good. Can't wait to get them back and onto the car.

The whole wheel was a brighter silver before, and TBH I don't know if I am 100% convinced on the colour, but at the end of the day they are back to factory spec in terms of the correct colour and the diamond cut rim. These pics make them look darker than they are TBH.

For 15 year old wheels that were frankly a bit of a mess I am very, very impressed. One other surprising thing is the weight of the wheel rim without the centre...scary light!

I have the same wheels needing a refurb. How much did you end up paying?

They rarely disappoint IME.
Cost ? The last two sets I've had done I stripped and rebuilt myself (with Fearnsport's help !) this involves a lot of labour but saves on Pristine's costs massively, but ... it can be a major PITA stripping and rebuilding them yourself, as if the wheels have been refurbed before they often end up with Loctite on the titanium bolt threads. Sometimes this can rip the thread out of the wheel centres when the bolts are removed. They can be fixed easily enough, but the timecerts with the correct metric fine thread are something like £2 a piece, if the majority of threads are stripped, it can start to get expensive ! !

Here's photo of one of the first set I had done by them :
