could Porsche shoot themselves in the foot?
Why would someone buy a 997 over a Cayman?
All the porsches look the same from the front - hell I almost waved to a Boxter owner the other day until I saw that he had a mesh over the side air intake !
So the Boxters have the side intake, so does the cayman as does the tt.

Call me a cynic, but it sounds like a con to me.
They create a coupe version of the boxter that doesn't need all the complicated fabric roof folding bits, because not everyone wants to be gawped at. Then they have the problem of how much to charge for it. By rights it should be cheaper - with every other car that you can buy as a coupe or cabrio the coupe is the cheaper option.
However, Porsche decide to tweak the engine a bit and sell it for more. But why?

On real roads the cayman will always be quicker than the base models of the 911,anyone who has some understanding of how to drive a car quickly will find the cayman easy and joy to drive, most people will never reach the cars limits on the road anyway, and as for the C2,you really do need better driving skills to go quicker than even a boxster.Im not a fan of the cayman, even though im sure it will be a great car,i just think it was another wasted chance to produce a new porsche that looked a bit different from the rest.
I have one of these little babies on order and yesterday I got to see it in the steel at the Frankfurt motor show.
Obviously having ordered a car based purely on seeing pictues I was a little aprehensive but all I can say now is WOW
It looks way better live, good from all angles. Can´t wait till December now!

I agree to an extent and will give my views as to why?
You can argue about extra torsional rigidity and a marginal increas in practicality with the hatchback style rear but ultimately I think this is a marketing exercise and Porsche is in the businees of selling more cars.
The sort of saddos who used to buy a car based on 0-60 now also buy them based on 'ring times. So the marketing will work.
Also similar image-conscious buyers (which is a majority of people including Porsche buyers) are conscious of the silly connotations of all convertibles/roadsters that they are a bit girlie are not real cars. Pathetic but why else do people belittle the excellent Boxster as a poor man's car!
Ultimately IMHO the Boxster and Cayman are both great cars but Porsche were aware that for some the Boxster has an image problem and some can't afford a 911 or don't want to spend that much. So they could price the same as a Boxster with the same power or do what they have done.
Which is give is try to amplify the cachet of the Cayman as more of a drivers car by giving it an immaterial power hike and a price premium (marketing psychology = higher price = better product).
I agree with the coments made by Adam, and in my opinion the company seems to be driffting in the wrong direction much in the same way they did with the 924/944,in the near future p reg boxsters will be had for well under 10k and auction houses will be full of caymans 996s etc...that loose money as fast as bmw's.I think the company has lost alot of its core values, that makes owning one special.

because they have more than one other member in their family?
Good point!
In my snobbish ways, I just assumed that thoses who have a 996/997/911 and that have a family will have a 2nd car as well.
We are off with my twins girls shortly and the Saab estate and roof box is barely enough as it is - never ever fit in the 996tt! also imagin baby sick smell in the porker. YUK. it would never come out.

This really is the best handling production Porsche ever.
Perhaps reason enough to charge a premium over the Boxster.
FWIW, I think the Cayman S is a glorious thing and perfectly in tune with todays "petrolhead". After tracking my lowly/girly 2.7 Boxster (without PASM), for the first time, at Bruntingthorpe on Sunday, I can testify to the cars fantastic handling abilities. It really is hard to believe that Porsche can improve on this, but with the Cayman S it seems they have done and only time will tell if it proves costly to them, by knicking sales from the 997.
All the best.

If anyone is interested in a Brand New Cayman, we have just got hold of one slot for a November 2005 (Launch date) car ! You will still be able to change the spec up to the end of this month.
Please contact me for details.
The Porsche waiting list for the New Cayman is at least 6 months.

the body shops are going to love that boot lid, as they'll get mashed on owners garage ceilings.
Highly unlikely.
The photo you're referring to seems to have some sort of fancy lens on it. Nevertheless the car is quite low and with the boot up I'd be surprised if it comes in at more than 6' all told.
Certainly enough for your common garage.
