Well at least I went on to own a 993 RS.

Hello everyone. I started this thread 14 years ago.

Not long after I started this thread I bought a black LHD 993 RS for £41,750 (I remember the exact price). I did a lot of track days in the 2 years I owned it. I even ended up doing a full engine rebuild and fitting a brand new factory exhaust system (13 grand).
Eventually I needed to do a big old extension on the house, so I sold the car for 70 grand (well, that's how much I received. The broker had the car up for £82,500 so they will have pocketed a fair amount of cash on the deal). Anyway, at the time I sold the car I was happy because I enjoyed 2 years "free" motoring...........I did a st load of track days (including 2 Spa trips and a Ring trip, and countless GB track trips, lots of hotel costs etc) and that 13 grand engine rebuild..........and the appreciation covered the whole cost of all this fun.

I could look at what happened during my period of 993 RS ownership in 2 ways:

1. What a nob I am. I sold a car for 70K that is now worth 250K. I should probably kill myself for being such a fool.

or......

2. I bought a 993 RS for £41,750 and drove it very hard like it was a "normal" car, not some kind of priceless relic. I drove it to work in the snow (on Pirelli track tyres). I took it to the shops. I span the thing countless times on the track (Steve Rance in the passenger seat instructing me!!). I have thundered round the likes of Eau Rouge and Donington National without a care in the world following mates in other 964 and 993 RS cars (hello Ben, Vic, John, Adrian, et al). I even took the car to Vmax at Bruntingthorpe! Not it's natural home of course, but it was good trying (and failing) to race Adam's yellow Ruf Yellow Bird there.

I choose to remember my 993 RS ownership under point "2" above.

Great post smile

Atta boy. I feel the same way. I remember seeing your at the 9 Sheister shortly after you bought it. Herr Manthey had played with it and they were trying to improve it's manners and IIRC they found you some additional horsepower (whether those were "Warrington special" horses or the real deal, I'm not sure).

I remember seeing the car on TS's website and elsewhere (PH classifieds ?) and thinking it was a car I should buy. I seem to recall it stuck for a while, and when I finally made the decision to buy it, it had disappeared off TS's website.

I know we met and spoke once, I'm guessing at 9M. At that point I don't think you'd tracked the car, but I know I was impressed to see your exploits in it over the next 2-3 ? years ! !

Whilst I loved my example, I didn't appreciate it, and looking back now it's the one car I'd like to have spent more time behind the wheel of. Unlike my numerous 964 RS's, I didn't really get the 993RS (it certainly didn't feel like the quantum leap forward over the 964 I'd expected it to be) but now I better understand it's not all about the speed, I think the 993 is the car I'd most like to own again.

I found the car less engaging than the 964, and always thought the 964 was more honest in so far as it felt there was less compliance in the suspension (IIRC Oulton Park bit you savagely) and I remember chatting to Colin at a PCGB hillclimb and him saying it was a tricky car to drive and it had taken him several seasons to learn it.

I'm doubtful I'll ever buy another one, but I'd like build something that provides 85% of the experience for a third of the price ....

That looks an awful lot like the car I owned. Wrong wheels in photo but it was in France and I bought via Tom S in c2005/6. Interesting the same French guy bought it back in 2012ish when I sold it. I tracked it, raced it the Porsche Open in 2007, won trophies (everyone won trophies in Porsche open!) and had it completely rebuilt and repainted in c2008.

Happy days, free motoring and drove it like I stole it, including an unfortunate incident at Brands Hatch in the Porsche open but hey ho. I bought it as a driver with high miles, imperfect bodywork and a non-original 993 cup engine. A deliberate ploy as I planned to use it hard. I've lived the dream! Makes me smile just thinking about it

Same here! I did 30k miles in mine and thrashed it around Spa, Nurburgring and most U.K. circuits. It never missed a beat. Discovered when I came to sell it that it had had a big prang before I bought it.....I never knew LOL!

Hi mate. Yes I was there at 9M that day we did a dyno shoot out, so that was probably the day we were chatting. When I bought the car it came with some Manthey engine parts and a Cargraphic exhaust. Ultimately the engine needed to be rebuilt, so we rebuilt it pretty much stock with a new OEM exhaust as well (all work done by Fearnsport) and the engine made 310 BHP after that, probably real BHP I think.
Yes, Oulton bit me alright!
