To be honest I looked at loads of 996s before I bought mine.

Got down to two.

1. Mine.
2. A 2000 W Silver 996C2 Tip with GT3 kit, wheels and sports exhaust (A1 5OUP)

Apart from the fact that the insurance hike was MASSIVE for (2) over (1), I did feel a bit like a fraud driving (2). You'd spend your whole life worrying in case you met a real one and got a pasting!!

I preferred the more subtle bodykit free dark colour at the end of the day. Each to their own though..

All of the items on car 2 are factory options as opposed to modifications so the insurance doesnt cost more generally

Well I sought out and bought a C4 with a GT3 bodykit and the wheels and the sports suspension pack, all factory fitted, no GT3 badge... Why? Cos I loved the way it looked. It was very planted and solid as a rock at speed - up to 164mph (clock) (not on UK roads...). whether the kit had anything to do with that I dont know.

Did I want a real GT3? Yes!

I then replaced it with another 996 and this one has got a GT3 badge on the back.

As long as your not trying to pass one off as a real GT3 I cannot see any harm. Imitation etc. etc.....

I have half a GT3 kit. Love the side skirts and see no need to add the rear wing.

As I'm in the process of buying a GT3 kitted standard Carrera 2 I thought I'd chip in on this one...

With regards to the insurance, it hasn't been an issue as it was factory fitted and therefore not classed as a modification. This was with Elephant by the way.

As to why have the kit, er, all the reasons above I guess. We would have bought the car without it, in fact, might have even preferred it for practical purposes (ground clearance) and am still a little concerned that it looks a tad OTT or like a wannabe GT3 but the car was right in every other respect and see the kit as a 'nice to have'. Oh, and with the standard retracting wing removed I guess that's one less thing to go wrong!

B*ggered if I know how I'm going to get a bike rack on the back though...

At the end it`s each to their own. Certainly a GT3 kit adds to the value and / or sale-ability of a 996.

Do you persecute the Super Sport versions of the 3.2 Carrera as well then ?

What is wrong with wanting the look of the GT3 without necessarily wanting the harsh ride and lack of back seat accomodation that comes with it ?

Do I bemoan you lot for driving round in wanna-be racing cars ? (There is an argument that the only true Porsches are those that left the factory destined for use on the race track).

Most of what we do in life is "watered down". When you pop into a curry house you aren`t actually eating what an Indian or Pakistani family eat, you are eating a pseudo creation designed for Western consumption. Try getting hold of a chicken Korma in Bombay.

Allow people their pleasures otherwise they might just start scrutinising what you do for your pleasures

Don't agree with many comments, especially ones like "selected it for resale value.." or "Really wanted GT3" or "wants others to thinks it is a GT3" etc etc,

maybe the person who ordered the car just liked spoilers and the GT3 one looked best? Doesn't make them a wannabe or care about resale. When I start looking for my 996 in the next few months I wouldn't mind a GT3 spoiler on a C2/C4. Personally think 996 back end looks plain without it.

Interesting thread this one ! Here's my tuppence worth:

My 996 C2 had its GT3 kit fitted from the factory and more importantly (for me) was lowered too. I like the kit and think it only really works if the car is lowered - check profile.

Do i really care what anybody else thinks about me as a result ? Nope

Do i still smile when i see my car and turn the key ? Absolutely

Am i still totally incompetent around women? Naturally.

Each to their own, as there's more important things in life to worry about such as the lack of authenticity in chicken Korma's as Henry claims. I had always thought this was the only dish real asians ate - at home or abroad, for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Bloody right mate, way easier to pilot at high speed than a GT3. Very secure - Pretty sure the GT3 kit helped as did the extra weight over the front wheels & the sports suspension.

BTW it was 168 you did

was looking at another thread on here about a 997 conversion on a 996.
the company carrying out this work fit a "gt3 kit" for £1000

Yep im pleased about that too, I kinda got the impression for some folks that they were less desirable for resale.

I personally love the look of my facelift C2 with the 'ironboard' rear spoiler, and the deep front PU and side skirts.

I like most folk never wanted it to be a GT3 replica, so in my case I bought one with Carreras instead of Sport Design 18's. With the sports zorst chrome tips, and the body-kit, all that left to finish it is the M030 lowered setup. But Im considering selling it soon, so would leave that for the next buyer to do if they prefer it that way.

Surely it just a personal thing. Spolier/no spolier no issue. If you like bling get the GT3 look. The only person likey to make comment is other porker oweners half of which wish they had the balls to get the spolier and ignored the smirking!!

I just bought a 996 Carrera with the Aero Kit and I love it. The only problem I have is pulling out of my Road , unless I come out at an angle the front scrapes .

I have the side skirts on mine and would consider finishing the job. I like the kit.....GT3 or not. Gives the rear a real sense of purpose.

Ah, Jamie, the X51 carerra is my favourite subject! It consists of:

Here is what is added/modified in the X51 kit:
- new intake manifold with modified cross-section (material: sand cast aluminium );
- new intake pipe supports adapted to the form of the intake manifold;
- new exhaust manifolds with larger cross-section and optimized flow behavior;
- new cylinder heads with optimized, CNC-milled inlet ducts;
- new camshafts with larger valve stroke on the inlet side and modified inlet and outlet timing;
- inlet valve springs adapted to the enlarged valve stroke;
- modified partition box in the oil pan;
- modified maps for the DME control module;
- new underside panel in the transmission area;
- all cars (except C4S) get a third radiator.

the picture is as follows:

Exhaust is a Cargraphic system........don't have too much details other that the purchase checked out 5 types before settling on the one I have.
