996 TTTrouble - help needed please
Discussion
guys I really need some advise, here is what is happening to my Revo modified 996 TT:
Took my car for a good drive using it's favourite tesco 99 ron fuel and it is definitely not driving right, it loses tractions loads so I reakon needs a new sensor there plus it boosts to 0.7 bar in 3rd then drops off nearer the rev to 0.6 and 0.5 bar so that's not right - so in my guesstimates its needs a airmass sensor and maybe one for the exhaust too. MMMMnnn not sure what to do.
The Revo chip is pretty much the same as the DMS one so I would expect to see it boosting at 0.9 to 1.0 bar then more on overrun - what causes a lack of boost? maybe the waste gate is playing up?
all advise most appreciated before a OPC pulls my pants down and gives me a good spanking

I had exactly the same problem..i cleaned the maf and it changed but still not correct ...my local OPC let me do a sale or return on a new maf and now its perfect..Took my car for a good drive using it's favourite tesco 99 ron fuel and it is definitely not driving right, it loses tractions loads so I reakon needs a new sensor there plus it boosts to 0.7 bar in 3rd then drops off nearer the rev to 0.6 and 0.5 bar so that's not right - so in my guesstimates its needs a airmass sensor and maybe one for the exhaust too. Do Euro car parts guarantee you're getting the same part? I know the M5 boys were having trouble with apparently identical MAFs.
I'd get the porsche part to be sure, otherwise you could be making a very false economy.
BTW If you want to buy my secondhand tt maf drop me a line. I bought a new one as a matter of course when I got the car but it made no difference -- ergo mine must be ok.

yes thanks for that!! the name I chose does seem like a mistake at times I have to say!! it should have been turboblaggit
I just want my car to get better - do you boys think that buying a new MAF will really help it with all the problems even traction control or rather lack of traction control control?

It will more than likely be a MAF related issue, unless you ever over boosted due to wastegate adjustments, which will highly be unlikely as its a Revo upgrade! (should be 0.9/1.0 boost max) I have PSI 570/580 and I boost 1.1/1.2 (this is ok for k24's) but if I was to ever overboosts to 1.4 I would get throttle body shut down which then fires it into limp mode (will only boost 0.6/0.7)!!!
As some of the guys have mentioned you can purchase from Euro Car Parts and pop it in yourself, so easy!

If I was a betting man I would say the MAF needs replacing too - seeing how several people have had the same problem, and common problems on TT are rare as they are pretty bullet proof.
If you get a Bosch part from Europarts then ring up a dealer, get the product code for the MAF & check when ordering the Europarts one that they match, so you know you are exacly getting the same part - or take supermono's offer up on that unused new MAF....quite a bargain at £50

Errrrr. It's the one I took out that I'm selling not the new one! 20k miles on it, 3.5 years old. Send me a private if you're interested.

That, doesn't make any sense whatesoever!!!
I would never buy a used MAF, no disrespect to Supermono, but you got to ask yourself why he is replacing it?
A MAF either works or it doesn't (yes it can collect residue/dust but you would clean that (spray) with some contact cleaner (make sure it doesn't leave any film!)
I would purchase a new one!

Supermono, I totally apologies! I never looked at your previous post!
But, I will say that the MAF's from Euro are fine! Bosch Parts, no probs!!!

It's ok, I do that all the time TBH for the sake of £300 I'd buy new myself and from OPC, but if someone isn't sure about their MAF it'd be a cheap way of diagnosing the problem, and you never know it might just go on for years.
As far as supposedly identical items, whizz across to m5board.com they're big on MAFs over there and some guys had bad experiences with non main dealer supplied kit. BMW in their infinite widsom provide a neat on board test you can run that gives an indication of MAF health.
It appears that when they fail, MAFs cause a lean condition although I think the lambda sensor will allow the ECU to compensate, but I had dyno runs aborted in my M5 due to a "dangerously" lean mixture. Something more highly stressed like a GT3 or turbo might not last that long overly lean so to my mind saving 100 quid on a MAF that might not be exactly the same could be risk not worth taking.

I have ordered a new MAF so this time tomorrow I will let you know if it fixes it - fingers crossed!
What still worries me the most is the fact it loses traction? surely the MAF would have nothing to do with this?
I got the wheels re-aligned a few weeks ago and all tyre pressures are perfect!

When you say "loses traction" what do you mean? you're wheelspinning everywhere? Have you tried it with the PSM off?
Is the PSM light showing on the dashboard? Maybe you have a sensor gone in the system so it's off all the time and it's turned you into johnny sideways.
I believe that in the old days one was able to use the "go as fast as you can go" pedal in a variety of positions ranging infinitely from "up" to "down" depending on how much grip is not being used by the cornering force
