But you can't fit the family and all their luggage in a Porsche.

thats why I have more than one car (even though I dont have, or plan to have a family for a few years)

might also be worth pointing out ive had 4 suitcases and a carry on in the 911, more than your average family's requirements when travelling for 4 weeks.

Just wait 'til you have children, and you will realise this was all just amateurish practising for the main event ...

Nothing in it from standing to start 135/140.

We had Adamt's M5 running against my X50 at Bruntingthorpe within two months of the E60 being launched in the UK. Over 140 the X50 starts creeping ahead of the M5.

Don't for a moment believe the E60 only has 507bhp, EVO magazine did a fuel test on Weltmeister's rolling road and the car was putting out 530+bhp whether it was 95 or 97 Ron fuel.

I agree - The E60 M5 is a very very fast tool - I know the X50 edges ahead after a certain speed say 140+ but would it stay there?? - If the M5 was derestricted I would imagine it would come back to take the 911 Turbo - given a long enough piece of road due to its higher top speed potential.

Whatever might win in a straight line, the M5 is the most disappointing car I've ever owned. I had it for about a week. Its about as interesting to drive as watching grass grow, and involves you as much as Tony Blair involves John Prescott in key decisions. I used to love my X50 996 Turbo, so its not even a fair contest.

Give me any 996 or 997 over it. Or Boxster. Or Cayman. Or 924S......(well, nearly)

A Bentley would be faster "given a long enough piece of road due to its higher top speed potential" but what's the point in comparing? M5 and 911 are different classes of car for different segments of drivers. Sure, there will be some exceptions to this but generally they are for different drivers.

When Porsche deliver their 4 door Panamera then that will be a comparison of similar car classes - saloons.

It's a bit like comparing a Yamaha R1 (super sports bike) with a BMW K1200S (Sports tourer). You'll never see that in ANY bike magazine or really on any Forum because they are different classes of bike for different riders.

Also, the 996 turbo was released in 2000, whereas the M5 E60 is a 2006 car - 6 years is a long time in automotive development. If anything, the 997 turbo should be in the picture here siince it's a 2006 model in the same as the new BMW.

What about weather conditions?...ever launched any quick BMW off the line in the wet?Dare i say it but the first few seconds are not exactly producing much forward motion where as any 911 will get superb traction, hence a much quicker 0-top speed time...

I would agree here. My M5 (e39) had a nice bit of grunt but the brakes were average and proned to fade quickly, it felt very heavy in the bends, it kept braking down/falling apart.

Daz,

It remember differently buddy I recall being ahead on our race

But regardless, both cars are extremely quick and can only be properly compared in the right environs, i.e a bloody big airstrip (brunters) or a clear autobahn

all the best

On the run where I cocked up my start you were ahead. On the following run with a decent getaway and no cocked up gearshifts it was neck and neck to 135/140.
