RE: Rare Porsche 959 on eBay
Discussion
Love the 959 - fantastic race derived car that brought technology to the road with sequentional turbocharging, trick 4WD etc. Lovely, but a lot of dosh. As for the red, hrrm, not my thing. Silver, black or white please.
Z8 not nearly as rare, a mate has one. Goes like hell with the M5 motor and funky retro looks. They don't half hang on to their cash too.

Didn't Bill Gates manage to import one of these into the US and paid silly money to allow him to actually drive it? Sure I read this somewhere....
Yeah took him 10 years and a lot of trouble.

Microsoft founder, philanthropist and self-proclaimed “nerd” William Gates III vents his software stress behind the wheel of two Porsches. His daily driver, a 1999 Porsche 911 Convertible is ripe for replacement, especially considering that Porsche has totally redesigned the latest 911, the 997, for 2005. Now, after waiting some 10 years, Gates can finally enjoy his other favorite Porsche: a rare (1 of 230) 1988 Porsche 959 Coupe. In fact, due to the 959’s questionable emissions and unknown crash ratings, it took a federal law signed by President Clinton for Bill Gates to legally drive his 959 on American roads. Rumor has it that Bill Gates and Paul Allen employed Microsoft engineers to write a computer program that could simulate the 959’s crashworthiness, which helped in the bill’s passage.

Lovely machine.
When I was a kid, it was a toss up between this, an F40 or a Countach/Diablo.
The F40 was always number one for me, but I still hankered after a black 959 (and still do)
Nick Faldo had one IIRC. I seem to remember a story that one of his wives had a big argument with him and took to his 959 with a set of his golf clubs.
He was more worried about his custom-made, hand built clubs than the car....

Have heard the Faldo story as well - His much younger 2nd or 3rd wife took a 7 iron to the roof - I think he was pretty bothered about the car, though, and I think that POorsche GB arranged the repair.
I thought he had 5 or 6 911's of various types and she took a club to the ALL ....959 definitely in my fantasy garage....remember reading about it in Fast Lane magazine...I'll get it one day!
Just noticed this for sale

How cool does that look with 4 IHI blowers hanging off it...! I assume by head size it's a quad cam as well. There's a bloke in Preston that had one of these cars. PF1 I think was the registration IIRC.

I reckon there was 3 iconic supercars of the 80's, the F40, the countach (OK really a 70's car but who remembers that far anyway) and the 959. Oh and not forgetting the 944
actually you could argue the 944 turbo was, but not in the same league so I'll skip that.
But the one that was most pioneering has to be the 959. Does look dated in some areas i.e. ass and eyes, but still looks great, even in red. I have a red one at home believe it or not, but it has to metal contacts underneath and only does about 15 mph!!

I seem to remember reading that the 4WD system on the 959 is still more sophisticated than that used in all the subsequent 911 variants. Has any magazine tested the 959 against the 997 turbo?
I remember seeing a magazine (may have been Autocar) about 4 years ago compare a then current 911 Turbo and a 959. If memory serves me correctly, they reckoned that whilst the 959 was slightly quicker, it was a much hairier beast to handle in comparison to the modern machine. Still a great car though...

I remember that , there was nothing in it speed wise but the 959 felt twice as quick as i recall

thats a different car surely?? one on fleabay has a roll cage and black seats by the looks of it ....
Yes, most definately a different car.
errr did anyone read my post
Yes, you were merely pointing out that the other 959 had been knocking around for a few years. Indicating that it's possibly not the only one?
And what's wrong with engines on rugs in living rooms? Makes them feel loved surely. My cousin had them on the coffee table, in the bath, on the carpet!
