Just curious but what was the stretch of Autobahn?

I used to live in Germany at the end of the A31 (Brabus hunting ground) and that looked fairly familiar. Maxed out several BMW M3s on there (derestricted) but 200mph looks bloody scary...!!

Decanter - the good news is that Ruf know how to set a car up for handling as well - my Ruf GT2 tops out (GPS'd) at 206mph but handles like a dream on the track - far better than original settings - not my opinion but that of a Porsche Cup Champion.

what I've questioned is the point of thrashing a car in a more or less straight line at over 200mph in the dark on a public road. What on earth does that prove? Apart from a death wish.

Because its fun!

Seriously though, at night on an empty autobahn you have practically nil chance of injuring someone else by doing it. As long as you and your passenger are aware of the risks and accept them then whats the problem?

This train of thought, i.e. not letting people make their own decisions about what danger they place themselves in, is one of the main things wrong with society today in my opinion.

Adam, fair play. Great to see car being used properly. Had my Mk1 up to 190 last week over there in daytime. Bit hairy with traffic!! The rest of you who dont see this being a good thing, grow some balls. The buzz doing these speeds is next to unbeatable. I have lapped ring' pretty quick and doing 190mph is on par with an 8 min lap.

Obviously you've never had to clean up the mess of somebody having had their fun and got it wrong. If you want to abuse your position because you have a high performance car and feel you've the right to endanger innocent lives, no wonder society's clamping down on this kind of stupidity, and they have my full backing.

What part of empty autobahn do you not get? Hell when i was over there I would slow down if I saw another car coming on the opposite, seperate, carriageway.

Explain to me, in laymans terms since you consider me to be stupid, why exactly this is a danger to others? You seem to have the same attitude as that whoefully misinformed documentary about autobahns on C5 the other day.

P.S. thanks for complimenting my car but it isn't a high performance car by any stretch, especially since a boggo Merc C320 can go faster

So, decanter, what is your approach for road safety? Where does risk start, where does it end?

You just don’t get it do you……so what the point of trying to explain it to you? Lets hope your not scraped off the road at some stage or another.

I wasnt complimenting your car, the comment was a generalisation regarding owners of high performance cars!

If you are going to critiscise me without knowing the circumstances I regard it as poor form not to explain the processes that you have used to arrive at your point of view.

If you are driving a well maintained car on a unrestricted carriageway on a dry clear night without one other car in view then what has led you to take such an intolerant view towards my actions? You may well call me stupid for in your eyes endangering myself but that is my personal decision. I would slow massively down when I came across another vehicle so was not putting others in any undue danger compared to driving at 70mph in the U.K.

Unless I'm mistaken I haven't caused a thousand children to spotaneously combust by my actions.

If you choose not to answer than fair enough but it comes across to me as having no answer.

Decanter,

I think you are in the wrong forum.

Not because you are a newcomer, not because you what Adam describes is perfectly legal where he lives, not because Porsche in Stutgardt themselves are road testing their cars on the Autobahn - and who are you to judge by the way ??

But just because your patromizing tone is just really a source of fatigue.

I am off to Switzerland in 2 weeks and will go through Germany late at night, as I have done in many occasions, it is the Autobahn, where personnal responsability is the rule, and I don't care about what you think.

...forum-itis rules again. All very succinct on the keyboard maybe swop addresses and have a propper chat. My 10 pence worth...accident on the road = broken car and possible heartache if innocent party involved, a car in the barrier on a track = upset driver?

I'd say the proof of the pudding is in the eating... despite an antiquated network, challenging geographics in large parts of the country and the fact that Germany is a transit country for lots of east/southbound traffic - especially in summertime when it's chock full of caravans and OAPs with bicycles tied to the back of their cars - there's hardly mass carnage on German Autobahns, which tells me the concept of personal responsibility, by and large, works pretty well.

Oh, and when I find myself alone on a motorway in clear conditions, with nothing to hit as far as the eye can reach and nowhere for traffic to merge onto it, anything that can happen is primarily my problem. Or will you come here to hold my ladder for me whenever I need to paint the ceiling in my house, too?

Ahh Decanter,
here you are at last.I have always wanted to listen to the opinions of people like you, would you explain, why it is when there is a clear road, you have to walk to the pedestrian lights, press the button, wait for the walk sign, then walk accross the road, not checking if any cars are approaching,,becuase the pedestrian lights are GREEN...
And let me guess, you work for local 'govenment'.

Well according to the reply's anything over 200mph is just fine, and damn the consequences, its all perfectly legal; common sense whats that then?

Decanter, you fail to answer the constructive questions completely. When you don't want to contribute something useful, why not just fick off? Nobody likes trolls

Your trying to twist the point, but if that’s the direction you to take wish why have any speed limits at all if their just not necessary, 100mph down the high street, why not!!

Well, if the Highway Code is similar to ours here, the basic rule is 'not to do anything that poses a danger or hindrance to others'. That's common sense, supported by 100% of decent, upstanding citizens and applies to all kinds of social activity/behaviour. Traffic laws should exist for one reason - to support that basic rule. Anthing above and beyond that is IMO superfluous and (presumably) serves other interests than traffic safety and social standards - to the detriment of personal responsibility.

Now pray tell - I'm doing XXX mph on a deserted, unrestricted Autobahn in clear conditions which allow me to see everything within the distance I need to stop my vehicle and then some. There's no other traffic and no merging points for traffic within or near this one.

Now whom do subject to danger or inconvenience, except (potentially) myself?

Decanter said:

Not once have I said there isn’t risk in everyday life, but travelling at 200mph isn’t everyday life for Joe Public’s experience.

I'd rather have folks stop making assumptions about 'Joe Public' and their level of intelligence/experience/insight/ability, and start assuming the ability of taking personal responsibility as a default until proven different.

Now were getting down to the nitty gritty, unable to put your point across in a logical reasonable fashion you resort to abuse, tells a lot about your attitude.
Nice that you want to join the constructive discussion again, decanter.
Where do you think the risk starts when driving a car, and where does it end? And what is your approach to road safety?

So you'd be quite happy sharing the autobahn at 200mph with a group of oap's wearing bi-focals at night?

I don't think you'll find people condoning driving through traffic at 200mph.

However going to a local derestricted autobahn with no traffic, where you know every bend and with headlights that allow you to stop within the distance you see clear (yes even at 200mph), I can't see the problem. I'd like to point out my own car has the same headlights as the RUF and the video does not do them justice. I've also been driven by Adam in this actual car on an airfield where he demonstrated the braking ability from 195mph down to 60mph in less than 350 yards.
