An old (k plate) mk3 1.4 golf.

Wife's old car, cat d write off (twice thanks to the wife), 140k on the clock, worth less than the £20 a week petrol it uses, no electric windows/central locking (not that it gets locked much) and the cd player doesn'y play cd's.
It can fit the fishing kit in, get the dog to the vets, never needs washing, costs less than a half tank of petrol for the 964 to service thanks to German and Swedish and recently picked up 15 bags of gravel for the garden.
Never failed an MOT either.

Oh, and really makes me appreciate the 964 whenever I drive it!!!

Audi A2 1.4 Tdi - aluminium body = lightweight (and you feel it), 17" wheels and RS ish suspension, good brakes and if you get a Sport you have the 90bhp engine. Ours returns 45mpg around town, is a hoot to drive and will comfortably fit 4 adults for the trip to the pub. I cannot recommend them enough, no wonder Audi found them uneconomical to make since they are so well built.

Brilliant car, had to get rid of mine last year after 8 years.
Really nice 1991 oak green two door, still regret selling it.

Here's the thing. Sold my AMV8 last month and am stuck tooling around in our BMW X5 and Defender until GT3 arrives in Sept. (haha). Struck me now might be a good time to experiment with getting a cheapo runabout for those bread and milk runs to the next village etc. Being a PH this escalated into looking at ClioV6s and 182Sports, E30M3s etc. etc. but that's not really going bargain basement is it? Think a few on here have mentioned having daily hacks - what do you run? Lets say £20k tops but really should be much much cheaper. Prize for whoever comes up with the best(IMO)suggestion for the least dosh. Only requirements are reliable and interesting and cheap enough to make me feel smug.I'd quite like to have a car that I don't pamper for once!

A runabout ? Well I've got a 21 year old mk2 cavalier 1.8 8V Sri, for my daily driver. Not the most ecconomical car due to close ratio box, but it only cost £40 2 years ago (I've spent another £700 in 35,000 miles of daily use) I recently modified it by putting an EARLY grill on it to make it look older.

I live in a posh suburb of Merseyside (Formby) and the cars you descibe above - AMV8, BMW X5 Defender GT3 ClioV6s and 182Sports, M3s are common as muck.

My car will do 0-60 in about 9 seconds, a replacement engine is most likely FREE on mk2cav.com, it will hit 130 before going into the redline and it has power NOTHING (apart from HEATED mirrors) at present it has the original radio cassette.

Here's one :

1985 VAUXHALL CAVALIER 1.8i CDi 4dr Saloon
103,000 miles, Blue.

This car has been lovingly owned by the same owner for 19 years and serviced regularly.
It now requires welding for the MOT, but a new car means that it is no longer required. Otherwise it is in very good condition with an excellent interior. This classic car would make a suitable restoration project or is ideal for parts . Any offer will be accepted. £100. Any offers

Hmmm Oak Green, I realy wanted one of those. I did own a Mk1 Campaign though. Sold it to travel Oz. Saw it 5 years ago in Ruislip. Some TT had resprayed it purple, put bucket seats in it and then tried selling it to me for £5k! I would have grabbed it if it was still silver with all the original bits.

My favourite cheap run-around is my 10 year old, 90,000 miles, Toyota HiLux pick up (like the one Top Gear tried to destroy).

It's wonderful - comfy, tough, unbelieveably practical and surprisingly enjoyable to drive (on or off road). It is a bit slow though.

I used to wonder what the Americans saw in their pick ups - now I know

When I had my Boxster I was using a £500 BMW 318 Auto as my daily drive, never let me down once, was an olive green colour with dark green hammerite in area's where I had painted over the rust! Can't seem to find pics of it at the moment. Sold it for £350 18months later to buy a MK4 Golf Diesel, which is now up for sale! Hoping to get a Skoda Fabia VRS soon..... Running a "Cheaper Porsche" now but IMO more fun!

Took my brother's old 1994 bmw 325 off of him for free after he bought a new one. He bought it new in Luxembourg (lhd) in dark green. fsh, 390,000ish km on the clock. goes like clockwork - cd changer skips a bit tho...250squid a year insurance, one set of new tyres and MOT costs for the last 3 years...

I did have an MG Montego, £900 and not much more than 900kg. More fun than it looked !!

Gone upmarket now...2.2 diesel Primera 12 months old/10k on the clock and half the list price. Boring as sin to drive, but so many goodies to play with from Sat Nav to rear view cameras. Don't drive it just play with the toys, and when you have finished drive off in the Porsche.

Had a Ford Puma as second car for a year and that was absolutely stonkingly good fun. Was really reluctant to part with it but cash required, sadly. Seems to be a theme developing about front-wheel drive Fords here. I'm now considering a second hand Sportka come year's bonus.
