I didnt perform well at North Weald it was too bumpy - my car is set up for trackdays
and smooth surfaces - I spent most of the time in the air
(excuse no.102b)

Tart..

hehe

In fairness - it was fekkin' bumpy!

Yep its a nightmare. Did it in the wet a while back and spent most of my time trying to avoid going sideways or off into one of those ruddy fences.

What was the fastest car of the day out of interest? I know in aggregate the GT3s kicked arse.
Plse excuse ignorance but what is the event you're all talking about - sounds interesting. Is it an annual thing or more frequent. Cheers.

This was the 2nd one I think. First was a 964RS only event, this time there were 993 RSs and GT3s invited too. Lots of trashtalk from the 964RSs on the lead up to the event (check Porsche Club forum, also more info on the event there in the 964RS and GT3 forums). They've gone rather quiet since the event however

Based on event 2 (hairpin + dragstrip + short chicanes), Manthey power!
But Merritt was absolutely blazing in his standard Mk2 in event 3 (long circuit)!
You need compliant suspension at North Weald...

Thanks Dan. Hopefully the next one will allow the new 997GT3 in?

I couldn't make it, but sounds like it all went really well so I hope so. Des organised it though so he's your man.

Im guessing that Colin Beltons Ninemeister 993RS car would have been if it had stayed in one piece but it ended up going through a fence in the morning and putting himself out for the day.. Reportedly has over 400bhp and much less weight than the GT3s.

Thanks for the big head Adrian

Yeah 'bumpy' is this years understatement! I had MPCS on with zero tread and it was like driving on ice every time I turned the steering wheel...not much grip at all!!

Steve's Mk2 GT3 has standard suspension and road set up I believe which probably helped on the last trial but take nothing away from the fact he was also driving like a man possessed!

To be fair most of the trash talking came from the Dessie camp alone I think and there was plenty coming back the other way!

Most of us 964RS owners know better....I guess we have them as we probably can't afford or are prepared to pay for 'toys' any more expensive ...wish I could afford a GT3 as my everyday car but doing 20,000 miles a year seems a bit much.

Great day though with top company

Hi Jason -

My car is running standard (i.e. original suspension) but the geo has been done. JZ put their track setup on it for me.

I did have lots of comedy sideways action - mucho fun hehe

Just to put this fully to bed. Any goading was two way and entirely tongue in cheek from most of the 64rs camp (maybe the odd exception!) The whole day for me was a chance to push the car or rather myself and hopefully learn a little. Great day great fun.

I'm not entirely sure of Steve's assertion about the RS having softer springs than the mk2 as it contradicts a claim by Andreas Preuninger in an article that was reprinted in Total 911 fairly recently. It claimed they went from 40Nm to 45Nm on the RS but also became progressive rather than linear which might account for perceptions of being softer. He also says that damping on the RS ends up between 10 & 15 percent stiffer than a standard GT3 on bounce + rebound simply because of less weight.

You can find the article in April 06 Total 911 or where it originally featured ages ago in the US mag whose name escapes me.

Sorry for the boring post

I read that too, but we took the springs off of the RS and checked them. They are definitely softer and - as a result need throwing away if you want to optimise track performance. This was dissapointing, not neccessary with the 964 or 993RS's.

Steve,
Any idea how the GT3 Mk1 springs compare?? The reason is I have a busted front spring and have managed to get hold of a set of almost brand new Mk2 springs. Whilst I am keen to save cash I do not want to upset the car I know and love.

It has the Parr 2 setup btw.

North Weald was so rough I didn't notice the busted spring, but that is probably more due to my skill level (crap!).

I'm not sure but I think that the MK2 has a different spring rate to the MK1.

4. Make sure that the car has been well maintained and is straight. A lot of cars have been off at track days so be sure to establish the car's history before you buy it. Also get a rev range 2 printout. Tracked RS's are not an issue. The car was built for the circuit and can handle track work as a matter of course. What is more important is engine abuse. It costs 40k to replace an RS engine. A well maintained track car with no rev range 2 is a far better prospect than a road car with 30 seconds of rev range 2 activity. There were very few extra's offered with the 996RS and none are considered must have, however a full passenger harness is prefereable.

Good luck

Steve R

Very Good advice I tracked my Mk1 for 4 years and spent a fortune at JZM keeping the car in perfect order not far off the price I have just sold the car for it also had an ECU read out at Silverstone OPC there was no rev range 2 incidents,,,
