newbie 996 questions...
Discussion
Okay... I imagine i'll get a little grief, but took the 996 out for one or two blats and have a couple of n00b questions you can point and laugh at me about...
1. Whine: When i first took her out, there was a whine from the back at slow speed - definaltly related to engine speed that dissapeared once the speed got up and didnt return when i slowed back down?
2. Smell: Probably because of where the engine is - but after some, erm, enthusastic driving, you could really feel the heat from the rear wheel arch, and a very strong engine smell - probably normal, but just wanted to check.
3. Squirm: this one is probably down to me, but i found on one or two corners, when pressing on, she squirmed a bit - not like she was trying to tail out, just 'wriggling' on the corner. I'm pretty sure its just my driving and perhaps not balancing her right, but just thought i'd ask..

Not sure about the whine but the smell is definately normal. the exhausts sit right at the edge of the car so you can really feel the heat.
As for the squirming, what tyres are you running? I feel my pirelli P zero's have a tendancy to "tramline" with the road especially when it is being subjected to a large dose of loud pedal. This very forum suggests this may be due to the soft nature of the tyre compound and sidewall. My boots will need changing soon so I will have a chance to see if there is any difference with a different type of tyre

Hello
the whine you hear did it sound high pitched ?
It could possibly of been the secondary air injection pump...this runs from cold to pump fresh air into the exhaust system to warm the cats up quickly....

not sure whether id call it high pitched - but your suggestion matches with the behaviour - so could be that cheers!
You are suffering from a normal condition known as "New 996 owner paranoia and acute hearing."
Does the car
(a) Go like utter hell
(b) Sounds amazing
(c) Give you a lob on?
If the answer is yes to all three then just enjoy the car and STOP worrying.
If you are concerned, then invest £725 in the OPC warranty *ducks stones*

well done fidgits, you finally did it, feels good dun it
whine - ive noticed some whine more than others not sure why, mine makes a "cam whine" quite alot actually but that prolly down the it having different cams than std.
I love the whine, I think its the best part about it (and ive got a aftermarket exhasut too but the whine just does it for me everytime)
smell - yes, mine smells like that at the moment, just got back from a 400 mile round trip I love driving the thing
but using it as my rep car is piling the motorway miles on it
ohh well, last one to 100k miles is a big sissy
