What sort of injection do they have? Electro mechanical or electronic? Would a switch to aftermarket management do much? Having a discussion about that in the engines forum, there's decent gains to be had, depending on the car.

Chaps,

For what it's worth, my S2 just made 203.5bhp on Vixpy1's rolling road at the Pork and Beef rolling road day. Standard should be 211, so I am 8 down, after 120,000 miles. All standard, apart from holes cut in the front of the air box.

Not bad I guess ...

Nice one dude - is that calculated flywheel or at the wheels? (I'm guessing it's flywheel)

Fatboy, that was flywheel.

Holes in airbox losing power ... awww shucks! (anyone noticed how hard it is to type when pissed?)

IIRC the power loss comes from drawing in hot air from the engine bay rather than cool air from outside - the heat counteracts the (marginally) greater airflow

Nope - the airbox is physically outside the engine bay, and the holes are in the front of it, sucking from behind the duct above the front numberplate. No hot air going in there ...

I think that the 8bhp down is just 'cos she's an old girl now.

Have the holes in the airbox made any difference?, I was thinking of doing a bit of drilling myself but I have memories of a honda 50 moped which had a long skinny intake trumpet attached to the airbox.
I was convinced (in my youthful ignorance) that this long narrow pipe would be a hinderance to the breathing ability of the engine, and looking for every ounce of power sawed it off.
Big mistake as the engine just wouldn't run properly without it and I had to glue it back on.

I don't suppose the 944 is so critical, and the air filter does seem to be designed poorly (as the incoming air is all chanelled to one end of the filter element), anyway I digress, does it sound any better, are there any gains in breathing (real or imagined).

Just to go off topic a bit for all you 944 owners who are reading this thread, I had a good play with a Honda S2000 the other day and there was absolutely nothing in it, and I mean nothing at all!
I bet he was wondering where the exra £22,000 went.....

Must be different on the S2 then - in my Lux the airbox is inside the engine bay (behind the headlight), with a cold air feed from the duct above the front numberplate.

8 bhp down isn't bad after 15+ years and a few thousand miles

The missing 8hp will be due to the standard airbox heat soaking on the dyno - why Porsche put the airbox over the radiator lord knows?

It is different on the S2, for sure. I have seen the other systems, and they don't all work in the same say, despite it being (nominally) the same car - 944. (It does mean a good strong cold air feed, but it does also mean you need to take the badge panel off to change the air filter.)

REALLY? Now that IS interesting. Do S2's always fail to make their standard BHP for this reason then? ETA: There was a big (ish) fan in front of the car during the run, so there can't have been that much heat soak, surely?

Andy,

Sorry, missed this bit.

Are there any gains? Don't think so, no. The throttle response feels very different, as it pulls with less throttle movement in the mid-range, but I don't think it is ultimately faster, no.

It does sound quite different tho'. Particularly on full throttle, it is much louder and rortier.

Would I recommend the mod? No, not really. To be honest. I have considered changing it back, but the holes I cut in the airbox are a bit irreversible (four of them, in line, about 5cm diamater each. Yes, quite large!) However, if you live anywhere near me (East London) then you are more than welcome to come 'round and see the difference, and borrow the modded airbox to fit to yours and see if you like it.

Thanks for the info and offer but I'm in the frozen north east (well, wet all the time anyway).
As far as the airbox mod goes I think I'll leave mine as it is, I do quite a few motorway miles and the extra noise might become annoying.
