Has anyone ever raced a new turbo against the old '88?

Whereabouts in Lincs Gary?

I am up near Goole/Shorpe so it may be doable, or it may be too far down.

Feel free to email me

Back to back the 997 very very good car which was the problem at speeds my 993 trills the 997 felt bland. You’re cushioned from the sensations of speed (but it was only a C4S)

I think the comparison would be interesting with the 993 turbo since it also has 4wd like the 997. The previous models have a bit of a disadvantage only being 2wd so would maybe lose outon some traction and in the curves (especially in the wet!)

In straight line performance the 930 was one of the first cars to crack the 5 second 0-60 barrier. Now the NA cars are capable of this. I'm fairly certain each generation would turn in a better lap time than the last.

it would be interesting to line up all the 911 Turbo models and put them against one another...

In Issue 18 of Total 911 (out on 12th October), we have the three generations of 4-wheel drive Turbo featured together. 993, 996, 997.

The results of such a test are pretty obvious in my biased opinion:

- 997 faster than 996 which will be faster than 993 (assuming standard tune of all cars).
- 997 easier to drive fast than 996 which will be easier to drive fast than 993.
- 993 prettier than 997 which will be prettier than 996 (told you I'm biased!).

The first two points are merely what one would expect from successive generations - more powerful and technically competent each time. The final point is a question of aesthetics and I'm clearly not objective, but find the more rounded, delicate lines of the 993 more pleasing!

I'm in soo much trouble now.. but tell me other people don't think the same. hehe
I prefer my 996 face to the new one. Driving wise the 997 felt a little sharper & more responsive but might be down to age.. I dunno

I did yesterday when I saw a black beetle convertible, then I realised it had 997 front indicators and a front bumper made to look like a 996 Carrera's.

Back on topic- surely a manufactorer like Porsche would ensure that it's latest offering was faster in all disciplines than the car it replaced?

I'm not going to suggest that a 930 is going to beat a 997TT. Equally, not all models were faster than their predecessors. This was particularly true where equipment levels increased (weight), without the necassary hike in power.

I can't remember a scenario where the power did not increase, nor weight. The power to weight ratio does not always increase.

I remember when topgear test older cars vs their modern day counter parts

Most of the old ones walked it
