This is easy.

Last week I had a 993 C2S for sale so they were the best cars.

This week I'm buying a 996 GT3 so that is now the best car.

Although the 964RS I have is going nowhere so that is always the best car.

Horses for courses.

Try as many as you can and see what is best for you. Once you have the bug though I bet you change about.

AND NEVER TAKE IT ON TRACK - unless you are of course prepared to descend slowly into bankruptcy trying to maintain the endless fixes of having the biggest smile on your face ever...

Thanks again for all the replies. Good advice re exhaust, as I removed the race can on the Motorbike I had this summer....sounded great , but a) drew too much attention & b) very tiring on the old lugs

Get the feeling I will end up owning both models at one point or another. If I get the 993 I get the ultimate driving buzz, but then will get a 996 cuz it has more creature comforts. If I get a 996 I'll possibly crave that rawer drive at some point & then will get a 993 !! Maybe I should just run now before my wallet takes a hammering lol

I like 964rs's reply very true !!!

I love my 968 because its a race car and if I dent / ding it on the track then thats what its designed for

I also love my 993 and am lothed to part with it as its been one of the best car I have ever owned but some italian money pit becons !!

I also love my rs clone as its just driving at its most pure ( well that and the fact if I admit to myself what it has cost I would cry !!)

I some times love my landrovers if they work properly !!!

The only thing I hated was my 996 even more than my volvo ( which I think I have sold)

Horses for courses ..... drive loads and chose the best car to suit your current life style / dreams !!

I think we can all agree that the 996 is a kinder drive than the 993 but less classic - but the issues about which will hold value more and how reliable they are etc are impossible to answer yet because although the 993 is old enough (and with an even longer heritage - fitted with so many parts that have been in use for years) to know almost exactly what will go wrong and how much it will cost to fix, the 996 simply is not old enough nor are there sufficient with huge mileages to assess what the future holds (wiring, computer systems, corrosion, suspension etc).

We also do not yet know what parts will be available for the 996 in the future nor what the prices will be - so while the 993 is a "known" commodity the 996 is not yet.

This is why we occasionally post information about these cars - to help people assess the differences and the risks. This is why we are so involved in the problem of the lokasil bores seeming to go oval because that could mean new crankcases at some typical mileage rebuild - but then even that is not such a high cost.

What is a bigger problem is the move towards whole replacement engines rather than rebuilding existing ones - so whereas a lot of competition exists to look after the 993 at all levels - there are far fewer places that can rebuild the 996 - if and when it is needed.

In conclusion then - if the style and comfort are equally scored for both cars and the only other issue is long term repair costs (and hence values) the 996 is more of a risk at present.

If the issue is likely desirability - the 993 being the last of the air cooled era and the early 996 styling having been superceeded by something more like a 993 - and the fewer numbers of 993's made - all suggest that the 993 will hold its value better.

But if the pleasure (and costs) of ownership are to be experienced as a daily driver - then even if the 996 proves more expensive - I would have thought it was worth the extra costs.

996 is an awesome car. If such a thing as a practical sports car exists then this is it. FFS i can fit my bike in the back of mine (in a bag minus wheels). Ive toured all around surrender monkey land with a cooler in the back full of beer at the locally permitted speed limits all in climate controlled sports seated luxury.

I always like buying cars in value for money terms and whatever you end up with it seems like you get an awful lot of car for your money so im sure you wont be dissapointed with either... even if the 993 has a retro dash...

As for a 20k 996 id have it checked checked and checked again .. then put on the porsche warranty.

Well I'll be doing a 250 mile round trip in a day, once a week for work , so any 993 owners past & present advise if it's comfortable on that mileage ?

No problem at all. In June I went round Europe with a few reprobates from here - 8 days driving (2,500kms) and got home still wanting to thrash the nuts off the RS.

Also have done splash and dash 1,000 mile trips across Europe in a C2, got to my destination and still wanted carry on going after 14 hours of driving.

250 mile round trip?? pah!! that's just popping to the shops hehe

Never understand this. Of all the 911s I've ever had the 993 interior felt the most special. The dash layout may not be an ergonomical masterpiece, but it is a work of art!

Work of Art ? Hmmm....and here was me thinking it is a disgrace and laziness/cost cutting that Porsche never overhauled the dash for what ? 20 years ?

I had it in the 964 and it aged the car far more than the exterior did. Absolutely no one who I passengered in it liked the dash. Most said it was a shame that it looked so old. I agree ......it dimishes the overall package and does date the 993 much more than the exterior (which I love). ALL IMO !!

OK, the dash does look dated, but to me it's all part of the character for that car.

The trouble is that the word 'dated' has pejorative connotations. The 993 dash represents an attractive and mainly functional appearance without the spaceship characteristics of so many modern cars, Porsches included. I say 'mainly functional' because it's certainly not ergonomic in places: I still have to fumble for the climate controls after nearly 3 years of ownership! However, if they brought out a simple conversion of the 993 dash to that of a 996, I wouldn't accept it as a gift - I prefer the one I've got.

Well just went to look at a 993 in a showroom & agree it's a stunning looking car, but for me the interior just wasn't up to what I'm used to, with newer cars. I sat next in a 996 & I felt more at home. I'm sure the 993 is excellent & more raw to drive, but I must be getting old & want those creature comforts. I think if I had a company car & the 911 for fun, then I could be swayed between the two, but to meet all my needs in one car I think 996 is the way forward.

I know if I drove one it might be another matter , but I know when I'm stuck in rush hour traffic for hours on end I'll be wanting that extra bit of comfort

What, you get more comfort by looking at a more modern dash? wobble

Do yourself a favour and drive both cars. Comfort is an odd thing, I find my RS with rock hard seats more comfortable than M3 E46 everywhich-way-electric-adjustable lay-z-boy armchairs.

Do you buy your shoes just by looking at them or trying them on and walking round the shop?

You're a bad influence If I get chance I will try one, but very few around near me. I know I prefer the look of the 993, especially the front....but you only get to see that when you park up Also I haven't got tons of money, so find it hard to spend so much for a car with dated interior (in my eyes)

Never easy is it ?

There is one fundemental point though.
The dash board will last, ugly or not bit like the car, the majority of the components were put together by craftsman who took pride in the brand, not robots, but there you go thats progress. Latest built to a cost and it shows in resale values and quality.
