Hi all,

Don't take this as a troll, it isn't, just looking for some advice for my first 911 purchase. I want a 911 and can go to mid £50k's for one. The car will be an occasional daily driver if that makes any sense. I have an old Fezza for the weekend fun so this would be mostly day-day type driving.

I've been considering a 2002+ C2 996 or a C2 997.

I've driven a 997 C2 and a 996 C4S in the past. I'm leaning towards the 997 (being honest) for it's looks, interior and build quality.

Question is, which is the better drive? Is the 997 worth the extra cash? Really want to hear from people have gone from 996 to 997.

I don't want to bring up the dreaded/perceived whatever RMS issue but is this less prevalent in the 997? Simple answer is fine. I will get a Porsche warranty no matter what.

Cheers,
LL

Q: 996 or 997?

A: 993 or 964

OK, personally it would be 996.

The other debate suggested by your thread is pre-owned or new.

I don't like the idea of paying a shedload of VAT for the privilege of speccing a car I can find later in private and careful ownership having also lost a major chunk of depreciation and having had all its teething troubles sorted.

Each to their own

Hi,

I should have said definitely second hand. If I went 997 it would be a 2004.

Def a 997 if i was going to make the choice. Tru the cost is higher and you will lose more but I think you are buy a 911 not an investment.

I went from 996C2 to 997C2, In my opinion there is really no comparisson between 2 similar spec cars. I cannot really find one area where the 997 is not better than the 996.

The real improvements are with steering and suspension, the 996 seemed much lighter at the front, especially at higher speeds and tended to skip a lot braking hard for corners. This was the first improvement I noticed when I tested the 997, once I had driven the 997 I was hooked.

With 50k plus....for a daily driver 997 every time.

Not sure I'd choose a 2002+ C2 996 over a 997 C2.

But with a £50k budget i'd certainly choose a 996 Turbo over a 997 C2.

My thoughts exactly .. And a problem I'm hoping to face at some stage when changing cars ..Although I'm not sure if I'd be so definite about the answer as che is ...

I hate to say this, but the 996 's are looking very dated. The 993's look fresher.

997 for me based on looks alone.

Drove a 996 C2 today, impressed liked it a lot more than the C4S and Turbo I'd driven previously, just a lot more "alive" feeling. Plenty quick enough. They do feel a bit old inside that's true and the build quality isn't all that but a nice drive all the same.

Trying a 997 C2 tomorrow so will report back.

LOL.... 993 fresher my arse. Looks circ 80’s exterior and 70's interior

Go for 997 if money not an issue, better interior and prefer the looks over the 996

I agree that the exterior of a 993 is starting to look fresher than the exterior of a 996.

However, inside the 993 looks very sad and dated, while the 996 is still bang up to date in this respect.

Welcome to the club... A 911 must be RWD and manual to provide the true 911 feeling

Well, most of you might think I'm a bit odd but I went and put down a deposit on a 51 reg 996 C2 today from an OPC. I drove one back to back with a 997 C2 and I just preferred the 996. OK it's not as pretty and not quite as quick but I like the way the car felt smaller, glove like and most of all the car felt a fair bit more alive at the helm than the 997.

I hate to say it but the 997 felt slightly dead and lifeless by comparison. I can understand why the older cars get more praise as I imagine the 993 vs 996 feels this way. The more modern cars get the less character/quirks/faults they have. But for me as a daily driver the 997 didn't really grab me. My wife felt exactly the same too, weird.

This car has a -10mm sports chassis, turbo wheels etc, apart from that bog std manual with a few options like litronics etc. I'm having a PSE fitted as I think this is an essential item. So should pick it up end of the week, can't wait!!

That's true. I couldn't see the the value in the price difference outside of aesthetics and I actually preferred the way the 996 drove so I guess I win on all accounts. I'm sure I'm in the minority about the 996/997 thing but I'm happy so WTF eh? Actually the 996 was totally squeak and rattle free too which amazed me on a car with 30k miles and an older design interior.

Oh forgot to mention but the dealer had just spent £3k servicing it, new discs all round etc and every service on the button over 5 years not to mention one owner. Chuffed!

Don't believe all the BS you read about the 996, it's a great piece of kit for the money.

Enjoy
