did i open some sort of long running 944 / 968 feud?

have to say that in looking at the cars on paper, & from a newbie to porker ownership at least, the 944 does represent significantly better value, and TBH, an S2 944 doesn't look obviously dated next to a 986, (yes the Lux's are looking a tad tired now)

Anyway, i have my budget and to get a car in good nick, looks like i will have to like the 944 anyway, so thats the camp i will join!!! thumbup

just have to convince her indoors now .... paperbag

As far as I'm concerned we are all part of the same happy camp hippy and I wouldn't worry about stirring anything up, we all love the front engine water pumpers . It's always been the rule that the later the car the more developed/ refined/ better it is (and of course the more money you have to spend to get one).

Yes a 944 may seem to be more value for money, but you are buying an older car with potentially higher maintenance costs - that's the risk. As long as you take your time and get a good one but leave some funds in reserve just in case, you can't go far wrong. Even the latest 968 is an old car by modern standards and things will wear out. Luckily you've got Porsche build quality so the car as a whole will go on and on and on so it's worth looking after them.

Good luck with your search thumbup

I'm not into 968 bashing, but I'm not sure about your logic:
1) "an older car": if the geezer's after a 1991 S2, it's not going to be a hell of a lot older than a 968, in the grand scheme of things (i.e. 15 years on), so recent use & maintenance will make a bigger impact on reliability

2) the 968 is more complex, and has known issues with things 944 S2's don't, e.g. dual-mass flywheel, diff pinion bearing, vario-whatsit.

Both great cars, but I don't understand the hype about 968s being great driver's cars, as opposed to 944s..with the same suspension pick-up points and components, logically the 944 should handle just as well, if not better. It is, after all, lighter.

No - not at all. I think all 968 owners recognise the origin of their cars, and as such we all give each other a wave/flash of the lights/thumbs-up on the roads. I think the buying decision is a very personal one though and a lot of people are very firmly in one camp or the other.

I fully agree with everyone who's suggesting the 944 is better value for money and don't doubt it's a very good car. It's just not for me.

They both look the same when you're sat inside, and both look stupid with the headlights up....

But I still love driving them!! ( in the daytime!! )

Get a cobalt blue 968 cab with white leather like mine. Excellent for getting pulled over and being accused of being a drug dealer.

Pimpin'

If I did it again, I would have saved some cash and found a 944 Turbo SE convertible in great condition for a bit less money. Yes, it looks considerably more dated - but the extra oomph would be worth it.

That said, I love my car, and it is pretty brisk. No real problems so far - but I paid top money for an absolutely mint one...

£8k? Buy a perfect 944 rather than a budget 968. Seriously.

I bought an extremely tidy (I would say that, wouldn't I?) 944 Turbo with Mo30 for £5650. Great performance. They are out there.

I live on the Isle of Dogs, thats close enough to Stratford / Hackney / Bethnal Green to seriously want to avoid the "Pimpin" look. Being a white guy driving a Rangie without window tints or 22" blingers gets me strange enough looks around here!!!

so Cobalt blue with white leather is out hehe

Seriously Guys, some entertaining reading here, but also some very good information ... i think i am decided on the type of car i want, just have to pull the cash together in January and go shopping!!
