I find all the scaremongering stuff about selling privately on the 911virgin site slightly irksome.......The only car I have had that I didn't sell privately was my E36 M3 becasue I was put off the characters it might potentially attract

There is nothing on the site which is untrue. I speak to a lot of people in the course of a year who are selling to us because either they or someone close to them has suffered a loss via one of the methods outlined. You will note we also include a section on what can go wrong when using a dealer.

When I was giving evidence at Birmingham crown court last year on one of the very few occasions when the bad guys got caught (and amazingly sentenced to a total of 25 years between them) was that a figment of my imagination ? Indeed I`ve been caught out twice myself over the years to the tune of around £40k, or again was I just imagining it.

Just because you know everything there is to know about buying and selling cars (until you get unlucky), doesn`t mean to say other viewers of our website do. It would be easy enough to just bung a stock list on the internet and leave it at that but I choose not to. Read into that what you will.

Same Mother different Fathers and so surnames, they just assume as brothers we`d have the same surname. We`ve given up explaining, although given I`m clearly far better looking than Tom surely the penny must have dropped !

My comments were aimed solely at Kevin who maintains all cars at dealers are crap, I was merely offering a suggestion as to why that may not be the case.

Re: our bidding £4k less than another dealer that can sometimes be the case. If we aren`t particulalry looking for a particular car then we`re not going to bust our balls to own it. Someone else may have specifically wanted it for what ever reason. Presumably we hadn`t seen the car either, we try and be "realistic" over the phone rather than stringing people along until they get there. Finally we reject, or bid low figures for cars that we see potential faults with. Others may not spot those defects as is bourne out by the fact the cars often end up being sold by other dealers at a price whereby the fault can not have been corrected. I do vaguely remember discussing your car on here before and it wasn`t quite as clear cut as us being £4k under the next best trade bid. Re: the £18k Boxster - £15k unseen wouldn`t sound too out of the way for an outright trade bid.

Re: our pricing I think it is a very open way of offering cars. Often our bug price is equal to or less than privately offered cars and yet there is still an element of protection. Indeed we have an `04 986 for sale currently for £24,995, the original poster here is going to be offering a very similar car at £27-28k privately (yes his is an`05 registered car but it might as well be an `04 because it isn`t a 987).

When we sell a car at the retail price it gets properly serviced regardless of when it was last done and we act on the recommendations for additional work from the independent specialists carrying out the service. Even the main dealers aren`t that thorough chosing to service only the cars that are due within 3 months or 3k miles. All too often people buy cars from dealers on the assumption the will be serviced when in reallity all they get (at best) is an oil change and the basic required to drag it through an Mot.

Different people want different levels of hand holding and I`m happy we accomodate that.
Henry, can you find me a mint condition 993tt and prove me wrong?

Never said i knew it all Henry. Far from it.

Just don't think it is quite as dangerous as you make out. Just an opinion and pray to God i never get bitten, which I agree is always possible.

It just seems to me that the bit on selling is not the most obective bit on the site.

How did you get caught out BTW?

I find it difficult to source cars, if I try too hard the car always ends up over priced. under condition or both! You end up buying from the "I`m not realy that fussed about selling it" brigade. We buy the best of what we get offered, if there is a glorious 993TT in there we`ll be buying it. We recently had to source a specific 993TT for a long standing customer and you wouldn`t believe the wasted journeys as far away as Scotland to see supposedly perfect cars.

One thing I do struggle with a bit are the prices on some of these "top end" 993TT`s at the moment. I think circa £40-45 is a nice figure and then see what`s around for the money. The danger with buying 2k mile cars is that you`re scared to use them for fear of destroying their value.

If we do get anything it`ll be on the website.

I thought before including it. On balance I felt there were a lot of people un-aware of the risks and the feedback has been positive either from people who identify with the issues or from people who feel they have avoided potential pitfalls after reading it. We`re not saying don`t sell privately, we`re saying if you do go down that route be aware of what can go wrong, (in the same way we give fair warning about some of the scams dealers pull).

The two occasions I got caught out were a very long time ago and were problems that arose from within the trade. Both issues have since been resolved.

While you may run a small risk of getting screwed selling privately (especially if you're stupid/naieve), you *know* you're going to pay too much at most dealers.

I've bought/sold forty times in last 15yrs and never had a problem. If all the transactions had taken place at car dealers, it would have easily cost an extra £100k in total. Probably nearer £200k.

Got a great deal from last garage I dealt with though so it's not all bad. Best to keep an open mind and shop around.

Went to see numerous cars at non porsche indies and the amount of crappy cars was unbelievable - as you say, described as perfect. Best was one with oil in the collant resovior and a mayonnaise like oil filler - trader said "nothing wrong"!

Mind you I just traded in my 05 987 to an OPC to buy a GT3 - got a good deal and the car was very good (checked big time). Maybe just lucky but also a 450 mile drive!!
