Yes, I did - but it was a lowly comprehsive, in the town centre, of a crappy northern town, where we were so poor we didnt have notebooks, we had to write on our own arms, but couldnt afford pens, so used our nails to scrape the lesson into our skin.

I struggled through, and somehow my 'common education' got me to college, and then University, but still in the North, not a posh one where the boys bum each other you understand, but they still gave out 'real' degree's and everything, and in proper subjects like Engineering, rather than Religious Bumming. hehe

So while you've never actually had to work a day in your life, because mummy and daddy had money, you can look down on me because your education was a lesson in how to bite a pillow as your taken roughly from behind by someone with a lisp, I worked damn hard to get where I am, and I don't constantly wave it about as some badge, I am quietly proud of my own, personal achievements, all of which I made without a single person violating my anus.

Utterly hilarious! rofl An inspired piece of writing! clap

No offence to anyone. Just praise where it is due!

Ummmm.....anyway - Hardly relevant, I suppose, but a buddy headed off to the 'Ring last year in a Cayenne Turbo, pulling his 964 RS on a trailer. He managed just under 5mpg. Under normal circumstances, if you're really gentle in an S, you'll sneak above 20 mpg, though once you hit town, the car will struggle to return 12. In the Cayenne Turbo, just switch off the OBC and whistle a happy tune. If you watch what the car is consuming, you'd better have the Samaritan's number handy. Trying to keep one of those filled is like trying to put out a Californian forest fire with a syringe and a wet facecloth. 15-17 mpg on a good day, and 10 or less the rest of the time; which'd be fine if the rest of the time wasn't most of the time. Because it's a relatively tiny engine pulling a 2 and a half ton behemoth, the smaller V6 is in practical usage, no more economical than the normally aspirated V8.

yes

IIRC that guy from the Prodigy who was on here a while back had a Cayenne Turbo. He simply said:

"Great car, I use it everyday. Thirsty though, more thirsty than the Zonda"

Nuff said when it comes to MPG really...

Edit to add, sorry to get in the way of your little fracas..smokin

Yeah, (as my footnote suggested) I didn't mean any offence to anyone with a Public school education, or anyone that likes it up the bum, or both...

Twas just an attempt at a humourous reply to Kay "I'm significantly richer than you" C...

Edited to add: Sorry for going off topic... we were talking about John Deer tractors or something werent we?

Ditto. I drive 15 miles each way into London daily. Can really wind you up sitting in stationary traffic on the euston road watching the trip go into single figures! £75 to fill up. But i didnt buy it for the economy. I heard a 2006 range rover sport td give it some welly coming out of a side road, and i realised that i had made the right choice IMO of course.

If you are interested in fuel economy but want a bit of decent poke and noise, then the new Range Rover V8 turbodiesel may be worth looking at, and there's always the V10 turbodiesel Touareg for comedy value (but that does 4 mpg when flat out)...

They're not the sort of cars I'd want but if I had to have one, the Cayenne loses out due to looking awful IMO, regardless of how powerful the engine is.

That said, both the new V8 diesel RR and the V10 Touareg must be chippable to some frankly mental torque, certainly would be a giggle mid-range acceleration-wise....

I've been looking at a Cayenne S to solve our current family car dilema. (involves xc90 for wife, or Cayenne S for me and a car swap with wife, or AN Other).

I've always been a bit disappointed with our E320CDI estate - rarely get over 20mpg in town. Sits in traffic etc etc.

I guess the Cayenne S on that basis would give us <15mpg? or worse? Anyone know?

As an alternative, does anyone know what a diesel XC90 gives or say a couple of yr old diesel Range Rover - not the new v8 one, too expensive. Budgeting around the £30k mark.

Else get a 5 series estate/newish E class estate or somet.

Drove an X5, was ok but know so many plonkers who live near us that have got one that i can't bring myself to own one.

cheers

Ajit.

Lexus Rx400h 0-60 7.5 secs round towm driving 30mpg. Built better than Cayenne, toureag and X5. Loaded with every gadget going as standard. Maybe not the most driver focused car around, but as you all are saying we're stuck in traffic most the time. Oh and did I mention its near silent ride.

Hadn't considered the Lexus before. Is there a lot of difference between the RX300 and the 400? (thats the one with the new hybrid engine right?).

Know nought about them but would love some insight.

The difference is (IIRC) they both have the 3.0 V6 - but the 400h is the hybrid.

Although when i had a 300 as a courtesy car, i was very unimpressed with the handling, but, very reliable, full of kit (go for the SE-l)

Rx400h is a lot quicker quicker and returns 30mpg, 300 is slower and I think you would be lucky to get 20mpg out of it. The dealer service is also second to none its on a different level to anyone else. First sevice at 1 year 20k £195!
The rx400h is the hybrid ( half electric) theres quite a good showcase on the Lexus website. The engine switching of in traffic takes some getting used to you constantly think its stalled! Also the box is totally unique from 0-125mph its totally seemless. I test drove cayenne and x5 and thought they were both poorly built and overpriced by comparison.

I looked at a 400h, but when I probed about an article I read about the 4x4 system they confessed that the car wasn't 4x4 above 5mph (I think that was the speed although it may have been 10mph).

Im afraid to say the car didn't do anything for me, although it was very well specced. In fact for the first time ever I couldnt get out of the showroom quick enough.

You cannot select permanent 4 wheel drive. The rear wheels are powered by the electrical motors only, they only kick in when you pull off, or are struggling for traction(icey road). This car was never designed as a mud plugger it was designed as a vehicle that could transport you, your family and luggage in ultimate comfort. It makes the commute a pleasure, and the peace of mind of lexus build quality and support. I do understand however that they may not be everyones cup of tea. I was 29 when I purchased mine and recently at a launch invite to a new model I think I was the youngest guest there. That said for the job it does I wouldn't swap it for the world, infact at 14 months its the longest I've ever owned a car.

You can't argue with the performance and fuel economy.

I'm not too fussed about driver involvement, its not my fun car but does need to deal with hols to the Alps twice a yr, kids stuff and general crappy driving.

I'm a bit weary of the results of short test drives cos it'll be impressive but you get no idea what its like to live with. eg, our e class estate has turned into a quite brilliant do it all car, lugs around crap, does the hols, carries everything in it...but is far thirstier than i would have believed on the test drives...

What would you say its like to live with 911wise? Did you look at a big estate in comparison eg 5 series/E class or even the XC90?

Didnt mean to turn this into a Q&A on the Lexus thread!

cheers

As I've just said I have owned it longer than any other car. As a "working" car I really dont think you will find much better. Its not my fun car either, I certainly wouldn't want to be taking it round the ring! As a comparison for handling It does as its told no frills or spills, but go for the steel springs not the air springs tested both found the air spring ride to be wooly and vague.
