I'd agree entirely - an S2 makes a fine track car for half the initial outlay, is a touch lighter and has similar engine power - back to back on track there's little if anything between an S2 & a 968.

However that's fine if you're happy with it's appearance - whereas a 968 looks a whole lot better & much more modern. Are the looks worth the extra £3-5k more...?

which is why I would have the 968 as a purely road car, who cares what your car looks like when it is going to be thrashed around a track.

I'll be honest, didn't know the S2 was a lighter car. Never thought to check on that. You've got me thinking about a 944 again now, and I quite like the looks, although arguably the 968 is more pleasing to the eye. This would be a 3rd car, whatever I decide to get, and will do the occasional trackday, but probs mainly drives out etc. I only ever had the 'S' and never got the best out of that, so an S2 would be a marked improvement. Begs the question, why did I sell my 944 plate???? irked

There was a keenly priced S2 SE in the last Porsche Post - which has all the M030 bits and Porsche UK chipped to possibly 968 power levels.

There's probably not that much in it, but the 6 speed or tip gearboxes are heavier than the 5 speeds in a 944S2, and the variable whatsit gubbins on the engine also add a couple of pounds, plus 968s used to run bigger wheels & wider tyres, though looking at the number of Boxster-wheeled 944s around, the latter may not necessarily still be the case.

Depending on which stats you believe the S2 is either 1320 Kg or 1340 Kg. ISTR this is the same weight as the 968 CS. The trickiest one to pin down is the weight of the 951 (944 turbo), I have seen figures for early cars as low as 1280 Kg and as high as 1400 Kg for 250 Bhp models.

My '89 250 turbo weighs 1380kg with half a tank of fuel.
