My views on 997 v 993 Have put flame proof suit on !!!
Discussion
Right I am sat here in my flame proof suit in readiness for the flaming I am out to get so here goes
I have decided that its time for a change as I have had my 993 for ages and I fancy something different either a 997 cab or 355 / 360 spider.
About a month ago those very nice people from Porsche offered me an extended test drive which I have take them up on having spent some time with the 997( 997 4s cab) now I must say it goes, stops and generally perform much better than my 993 but and here is the but it just seem so dull.
I really really wanted to like it as I am sure with the other route lies financial ruin and heartache and I really didn’t want to be one of those beardy driving pipe smoking people who say “oh they don’t make them like they used to do” but no matter how I look at it or drive it its just dull in fact my old 968’s more fun.
Now don’t get me wrong it is a great car it really is and I can seriously see why people would buy it and I know its been very successful but it just seems like any other car to me i.e. bmw merc etc
So whats the answer have I test driven the wrong model ? anyone else gone from the 993 to the 997 with any better views ?

I think that is quite a general view, that the 997 is more boring than the 996/993, but to give a fair comparison I think you need to test drive a 997 S Coupe? The springs are softer in the cab etc and the 4wd and hood adds weight...
Having said that I traded a 996 for a 997 and think it is a 'better' car in terms of everyday use and no less exciting.

I went from a 993C2S to a new 997C2S. I still think the car is awesome, although I did and still think the 993 is a cracking car. Having driven many 996's including the Turbo the 997 in my mind is till a better all round car.
Once thing that must be mentioned is that at least the 997 is getting back to the way 911 should look - Porsche lost the plot with the 996 range on styling!

Didn't most people think the 996 when it came out was very dull compared to the 993? Can't see that the 997 was going to dramatically change anything but if you want to spend £1,000's and £1,000's more on a depreciating car that you are not sure about then Porsche have got their product spot on.
Look at different models and find one you do like would be my advice...

I agree - I was not fussed on the 996 - I have driven the 993 ( 2s and Turbo) and loved them. The 996 was a big let down for me .. I actually preferred my Boxster S, hence why I never bought a 996. But the 997S has moved the game on - its useable, fast and reliable (so far). If you want more adventure then you have to lose the comforts and go for the RS or GT3 models in 997 form. If you can afford it, the TT or the forthcoming GT2 will no doubt be up to the job of the last one and then some.
In terms of the Italian selection ... I`ve had both. The 355 is sublime, but it will get on your nerves after a while - it rattles and is not built like a Porsche 993. The 360 is more like a Porsche 996 and a significant improvement over the 355, but it has no heart -and to be honest, its not really very pretty (but is any current Ferrari though?). Plus you`ll never be able to park it anywhere and you`ll know what a goldfish feels like within a few minutes of ownership! But for those days when the bypass is free and no police vans about ... its motoring eutopia at about 8000 rpm!!

Agree completely. I spent several hours on track with a 997S loaded with PCCB and just about everything else. It's a lovely car, certainly quicker and with more grip, but feels really dulled down, especially the throttle response and steering. Very nice, but doesn't feel special at all compared to a 993, or 968 for that matter.
