Seriously though great car just don't like the image ( I am sure thats very shallow but hey its my money !!)
You don't have to buy it of course, but do drive the new S, it is a very useful yardstick with which to measure smiles per pound, plus I suspect you won't drive it like your mum

My mum has the new 987 its really not for me and unusually for a mum she is quite a good driver, sub 9 mins at the ring !!!

She used to race when she was younger and hasn't really worked out that she has to slow down on the roads yet !!

In fact the whole family is car mad even my granny had an original rs500 cosworth when she was in her 70's, now that was scary !!!!!!!!!!

Each to there own i suppose, I looked at getting a 993 about 6 years ago, but thought it felt like an old car back then!!! although i admit it went well. This time round thought about a 996 until i tried 997c2s with sport pack..brillient!! is every thing you can want in one car , comfortable GT cruser when you want, but as soon as you lean on it everything firms up and handles like a go-kart, powered by great engine that sings all the way to 7300. Get with the 21st century cool

Try a C2S with -20mm and a Tubi and tell me that is not fun?

Although having said that I have bought an Exige with 330bhp because I needed a little extra fun.

And having said that I am getting a new Fireblade as I need even more fun that that.

Is there any end to this madness?

Should we be surprised that some of us think that the 997 is dull and too safe compared to older 911 models? I think not. We, on this and other forums and that are members of car clubs, are enthusiasts and we are in the minority. Porsche produce cars for the majority of their customers who buy a Porsche for what it says about them - 'I am flash and drive a very expensive sports car'. Because these customers are their bread and butter the 911 has got a bit duller and bit safer in the eyes of us enthusiasts.

I would be willing to bet that if you collared a 911 (or boxster, or...) driver as they were getting out of the car and asked them if they knew what PistonHeads was, the majority would not have a clue of what you are talking about. These are Porsches main customers not us.

However, Porsche do of course realize that they have a following of enthusiasts and therefore offer the 997 GT3, etc. So all is not lost!

With all due respect, and speaking as a kean car nut of both old and new cars the loyalty of Porsche is to their current customers, and rightly so, and not to people who are buying 10 year old cars..
They, as business people/engineers cant afford to hold the same fondness for older models such as the 993 which they stopped making 10 years ago. It was after all not moving with the times that almost killed off Porsche. Its time to move on for them (and maybe us), and in ten years it will be time to move on from the current 997 series, of which I own a 997 2s.
I always keep an open mind in all and everyones points of view it is after all what makes things so varied and interesting. Many people point the finger at Porshe in many different ways i.e. betraying the "enthusiasts and the old school principals". I would be interested to know how many people have bought and still own a car originaly purchased from porsche? ie a porsche customer. I think a lot of people are pi$$ed at porsche because they have finaly got their act together, and this doesnt allow people to make an easy buck on the back of their products, through second hand values/sales/ depreciation/limited cars etc. I read in 911 that Porsche made 75000 993s in 4 years, and sold 120000 996s in 6 years, so how does that make the 993 exclusive-ish?? I would say thats a mass produced car all be it with slower build times due to production methods and higher costs, against profit per unit!
I like the 993/964 and would consider one alongside my current car to be a nice contrast..would I consider them to be better than my 997?? Maybe I would have 10 or 15 years ago, but then again the 993 was the new 997 if you take my point. Happy Porsche days what ever you drive I say...

Lots of very interesting replies here just to clarify my position.

I am certainly not saying that a 993 is better than the 997. As I said in my original post the 997 I had went, stopped infact did every thing better than my 993 (well except that you had to hold the key to close the roof where as one click non the 993 button and it closes its self ... minor I know)

And if I only had one car then it would probably be a 996 turbo soft top but the second would probably be a 997 2s cab but having just dropped the 997 back I am not missing it and whilst I had it I never looked fondly at it, where as soon as I come home I cant help looking at the 993 I even miss the damm thing when it goes in for a service !!!! Sad but true

I think me real point is that I feel a bit stuck I want to move into the 21st century but when I tried it I was disappointed I remember when I was a kid all I wanted was a 911 or a Ferrari (after the arena posters)

I can remember the first time I drove a 911 ( 3.0sc ) it was just not like anything else I had ever driven the same with the Ferrari in fact I remember doing nothing but stalling both of them on the first drives if I am honest !!!!

Now I took our rs4 to the dealer when I went yesterday got out of that and got into the Porsche and thought well there is really no difference here!! And I was quite looking forward to getting the rs4 back today sad but true.

And that’s it in a nut shell when I am comparing an Audi estate to a 911 either I am getting old or Porsche are missing a trick

Phib

p.s. Re lots of respect to my slightly deranged family ... well to give you some context my mother's only comment on the 997 whilst on a very slippery roundabout with all the traction bit turned on and at about 50mph was " why does this stupid thing keep under steering " ....aghhhhhhhhh
