I moved from a 964 Targa to a 993 Coupe.

I changed because I wanted a C2 Coupe either 993 or 964, but ended up with a 993 because good condition 964s in a nice colour at the right spec were hard to find.

If you already have a good 964 then keep that and spend the money on upgrades instead.

993s are better looking, but a lowered 964 with the right wheels looks lean, mean and utterly hardcore and with the right upgrades will much more satisfying and fast than a standard 993.

Nowhere near twice as good just a little bit more modern, the 993 is twice as ugly though. With pricing for the 964 and 996 the way it is I cant imagine any reason for buying a 993.

I must say that I am a little suprised at the responses to the original question - because most seem to suggest that the 993 is a little better but similar.

I disagree - the 964 is a more lively car to drive - it feels as if it has a shorter wheelbase and squirms around more when on and off the throttle - more fun less acomplished.

The 964 costs more to run, will depreciate more (simply becasue there are more rough ones out there in the mix), as will be slower to sell.

The 993 costs more is far better and will depreciate less and sell quickly.

Thanks for all the views, I am in two minds because I cannot really justify the change due to the pending birth of our first child and mrs PH5121 giving work up (if she likes being a full time stay at home mun she isn't going to go back to work). The 964 is a great car, I only get a new car when I am so bored with the old one that I don't enjoy driving it, and because I drive it so infrequently I am not bored.
But it is like an itch that needs scratching, that if I don't do it now circumstances may not allow it in the future, to be honest, reading these replies I don't think I should rush into a purchase unless the right car comes along (If the speed yellow 1996 C2 which used to be reg N101 DYG, with turbo wheels, big reds, black leather, no air con and the 911 badge off a 964 celebration ever comes up I would love to have it, as it was my dads 10 years ago and was a great car) as the 993 isn't so vastly different to the 964.
The 964 has had the best residual value of any car I have ever owned, I was offered £2k less than I paid for it 5 years ago two weeks ago, by the specialist that I purchased it from originally, who has serviced it and knows its' faults. That was a cash bid, not a part ex price, that is what set me off on this train of thought.
I harbour no ambition to own a 996 (except a GT3) and I don't have a beard or any brass ware.

I can't say I agree with this, especially in the long term. A 964 can be had for pretty cheap money these days and can't have that far to fall. With the high supply of 996s and now 997s this can only put downward pressure on 993 prices which are still remarkably high. I'm not saying a 993 will be as cheap as a 964 or that the 964 won't depreciate, but I think if you bought a good example of either C2/C4 variant then the 964 would lose less over say a 5 year period.
