So if you'll look at my pictures you'll see a Porsche motor with everything attached is marginally bigger than a V8 with nothing attached, So I guess you were right after all.

..... not even a nibble from the Porsche guys, even Mr. Sleepy has gone quiet.

Mr Gravel Rash......I said nothing of the sort!! I wouldnt even suggest that the Chev lump was smaller.

... it MUST be heavier though..... right?

I wouldn't know, specific weights of assorted engines is somewhat outside my area of expertise. I have to say I much prefer the sound of the flat-6 though wink

No takers (what a contradiction!) from the Pork owners because most of them know feck all about cars, engines etc. They know everything about image though. Trouble is they still won't admit that everyone thinks you're a wan*er for driving one. Infact, the wan*er image is so bad they probably think the same about each other.

However on a 911 this is sacrilege (as was water-cooling)...
That is a pretty dumb thing to say imo. I totally agree that you wouldn't want to rip out the 6 & replace with a V8 in an older car. But where are Porsche going to go now with their product evolution without moving on to a V8/10/12???

They ditched air cooling - that is a GOOD THING. They are now playing in the same county as every other high performance manufacturer, but they are still no way near being in the same ballpark in terms of the engine potential (the 6 must be at the very high end of its limit).

Look at the competition:

Ferrari run V8's / V12's
Lambo run V12's
BMW run V10's
Aston run V8's
Audi run V8's

Porsche will have to look at either an 8 or a 10 in one of their not too distant evolutions, otherwise they will see themselves being outgunned heavily by their contemporaries & will not be considered as a viable alternative.

People may rue this as a bad thing, as per the passing of Air Cooling but the product has to evolve to maintain its position.

says he who never ever ever drives his car, anywhere.

when was the last time you came on one of the runs you said you where coming to?

ohh yeah, thats right, never.

is that becuase your busy "knowing stuff about cars?" as in, fixing it?

you should get a certificate when you buy a speed six tiv, saying "i bought it cos I knew all about cars, didnt know they ed up all the time but now after owning it for a while and not being able to sell it at an economically acceptable price i have learnt to fix cars myself, thus I know loads about cars"

still looking out for ya on the runs, your either not their or waaaaaaaay out behind like the other tuscans on the last run wink

I agree with you. Porsche need a new engine. Six pistons shouldn't sweep more than three litres, preferably less. Therefore an eight or a ten is needed.

Personally I favour a unique configuration, one which to the best of my knowledge has never been built before. In keeping with Porsche's flat engine heritage:

A boxer ten!

I've never seen you either. Therefore you must never drive your car too. Is that because the engine on your 996 has blown and you're saving up to get it fixed as the warranty wouldn't cover it? It'd be worthless otherwise....but wait, 996 resale values are pretty much that anyway.

You might aswell just get it out of your system and treat yourself to a TVR (or an Ultima). wink
