Just wanted to share my experiences of late with people. I know that sports exhausts are one of the most common customisations that people on here do to their pride and joy and since buying mine just over a year ago, I have been constantly researching the options available to me. After the having a PSE fitted to My Boxster S, I knew that I needed a little more of a rumble on the 996.

Having narrowly missed out on a few ebay auctions I started looking into alternatives and liked the look of the Oettle job. This is a company in Germany that will modify the standard boxes, so that some of the exhaust bypasses the silencers. I have read a lot about it on Boxa.net and heard some of the results and liked it.

Anyway, I finally took the plunge yesterday and went down to Hayward and Scott (I am in no way associated with this company). They made a similar modification to my standard exhausts. I was in and out within a couple of hours and am really pleased wioth the results.

It's not as loud as the sports exhaust, but has a nice low rumble and sounds great on acceleration. Although when cruising at motorway speeds it isn't that much different to before the modification.

I know this wont increase the power and may still replace with sports exhaust at some point in the future but it was a lot cheaper than a full sports exhaust and I am very pleased with the result.

I have tried to include some image files below (first time posting images, so forgive me if they don't work).

And here is a little video of the sound whilst stationary on my driveway:

Hope this is useful to people, feel free to ask me anyquestions if you are interested.

I paid 250 plus VAT for a Drive in Drive out service.

I was quoted 150 if I removed the boxes first.

I think a group of Boxster owners got together and negitiated a deal for 220 each, the discussion is on Boxa.net if you search for Hayward Scott

So all that is done is a pipe welded on ?

What does this do, reduce back pressure ?

Any idea on db's ?

Yeah, that's all it is. A small one inch pipe on each box. My understanding is that it allows some of the exhaust (when under greater pressure) to pass straight into the exit without passing through the silencer.

Haven't had it measured for DBs

What's the benefit of the actual bit of pipe they've welded in? Wouldn't just drilling a hole in the exhaust before the silencer achieve 95% the same thing? Will it still pass emissions requirements for MOT (presuming you're bypassing the CAT too(although, as I can't see it, and doubt it's IN the silencer, perhaps you aren't))?

I did ask this and apparently the CAT is not bypassed, it is before the new pipe, so it will have no effect on the emissions.

This approach is similar to the Mk1 Porsche Sports Exhaust and is what Oettle do to the exhausts. Mk2 PSEs (ie facelift exhausts) are slightly more complicated, hence the sound on the 2 approaches are different. I'm sure mousem40 will be along to give the tech detail biggrin

I'd imagine Oettle and this mod would be similar c. 105dB.

Sounds good right up until you're next to a Fezza with a 127dB exhaust hehe

I did the MkII mod on my exhausts, this copies the official PSE exhaust design without the valves. You cut off the 'nipple' on the 2nd stage of the silencer and pipe it (using 2.5" pipe) into the exit pipe. Job done - sounds exactly the same as a PSE ...

No issues with idle pressure etc either as you are still using the 1st and 2nd stage silencer - you are just bypassing the 3rd (all the time..) smile

If you want to see pics then give me a shout as I can't upload them at work ..

This is actually quite tempting for the money and the apparent sound benefit.

The PSE seems to cost at least £1.5k which is too much for me to justify (unless the boxes had rotten through).

they now want £275 + VAT for drive in/out job on a 997. As I've got a spare set of exhausts so can stick originals back on when its sale time, sounds good to me?

Any idea of how long it takes?

And do you have a N/A or a Turbo?

thanks

Looks appealing, I just wish I could find someone a bit closer to Leicester to do it - the £300 soon turns to £400+, and a whole day spent when I travel all the way to Essex!

Guys, I have posted about this mod on here and the porsche club forum for years but you never listen.

Bit of 1" pipe from B&Q £7.50,(or 1.5" if you want it louder) and cut into the box as above, drink to a welder or quick fit and job done.

But has no mines bigger than yours factor down the pub.

Keep spending your £1500 :-)
