I've spent a bit of time the last coupe of days exploring DR and I like it!

This from a dyed in the wool Evo subscriber...

Why are people so quick to try and kick people's new ventures, jealousy?!rolleyes
Maybe I'm getting old but I can't get my head around DR - I spend probably 3-4 hours a month reading Evo and as much again looking through old issues. DR - probably the most time I've spent there is 10 minutes - can't find anything, and just haven't got the concept of reading the internet like a book
Totally with you. I want my magazine in my hand not on the screen. Shame as I really like Harris' writing and I miss it from Autocar and GT Purely Porsche.

I like Chris's car. I'd even be interested at the right price. But if its over 50k I don't think it is. For 60k old school enthusiasts would buy a mint 2.4S and newer enthusiasts would buy a 996GT3RS for examples and for more than that you could build almost an identical 1973 2.8RSR that would actually be worth closer to what you paid to build it than what Chris has built.

Chris's car is fantastic spec...but its his vision and his dream...to anybody else its just a great spec rep...and they have a max price...end of story.

I know of a few people spending 100k to rebuild very accurate copies of 2.8RSR replica's...do they expect them to be worth 100k at the end of the build? Do they hell...but then they are not building them to get their money back they are building them because they would like to enjoy a very very good 2.8RSR rep without spending 400-500k on a real one....and they don't give a crap if they lose 50k over 2-3 years as they can afford to easily.

I don't think Chris was in this camp when he started the project. Hence the dilema when coming to sell......

If the trick bits are taken off then the value plummets with them too....

As someone that has spent 2 years and a little fortune to build his interpretation of the ultimate 911 the talk of around 100 large ones makes me smile.

It does not matter what went into building the car. It is not a race car, it is not a daily driver, it cannot have FIA papers for classic cars competitions.

It's a wonderful example of someone's vision, executed to the perfection by the best shop.

The car is worth what the buyers are willing to pay, but it will take a special person to fork anywhere near what Mr Harris has in it.

Chris by making it HIS perfect 911 has just shrunk the possible market for it. Some don't like the colour, some thinks 911 should all have tails. Some think the G50 is for the ladies, some think the A/C and hand stitched dash are unnecessary. Some don't care about 8k spent in dampers when you can have Ohlins, Motons, JRZs, Foxes for 1/3, 1/4 and 3/16 of that. Some would rather have EFI and Motec rather than carbs because they do not have a mechanic ready to tune the car every month. Some might argue with the 15" Fuchs and the fact that there are only the Michelin TBs avaliable as a tyre. Some would prefer a crazy revving 2.8 with early S cams, some would argue for a 4.0 9M style torque monster.

I think that when you spend close to what a 997 GT3 RS costs for a "replica/interpretation" you demand it to be EXACLTY like you want it.

I love Chris' car, but I would (and did) do a lot of things differently.

The flip side of the coin is that it would take years to get the finished product whilst this is avaliable now....

But often the journey is more important than the end result
Sounds like a fair summary to me.

Is the car ACTUALLY up for sale and has Chris ACTUALLY mentiond a six figure price tag?

Or is this just another protracted, PH fueled hypothetical debate?

The concept is similar to Chris' car.

I took a 74 tub and decided to build my idea of the ultimate aircooled 911. I had one of the best Porsche shop next to me (we used to live in the USA at the time) and help me accomplish my dream.

So I went IROC look, Mexico blue shade, 935 coilovers, 993 RS 6-speed tranny (G50/31), 993 based 3.9L motor with ITBs and Motec running it, 17 inch Lindsey Fuchs etc....

A lot of people would frown at the 6-speed transmission (especially because we had to swap a 964 floorpan in order to make it fit, destroying any chance of getting FIA papers). Others would say EFI is wrong in a 74 etc.... Some people rightly say I could have saved 70-80kg if I went with fiberglass/cf for the wings/bonnet and Lexan for the windows... But I built it for me, to chase the GT3 RSs at Brands and Donington and to drive it to work or Tesco's with my little ones in the back.

I could talk and write for hours about the car. But this is not the right thread....

Yeah Bob did a great job.

The car was featured on Excellence in the Aug/Sep 2007 issue and Bob the photographer.

(i know there's that other thread but..)

...you know what you've got to do don't you?

hehe

(when you have time of course!).

that's the good thing about PH - with a few exceptions, people are interested in the cars and it isn't, or should never be, seen as 'boasting whether it's a mk2 escort or a mclaren F1... "911teo is this your 911" and all that..!
