Frank & Bob

Two very lovely cars there!

I went along to Porsche at Silverstone and was able to run the 2.9 (18") and 3.4s (19") the latter also had the sport pack plus which seemed to inject steroids into the car when the button was pressed!

In terms of ride and handling either handle admirably but I found I could push the S harder in the corners on the bigger wheels, either way for road use I don't think you could "that safely" exploit the boundaries of grip I'm afraid.

I would certainly recommend some advanced driving the courses at Porsche are focused and useful (if expensive) but for £150 you can rent a Boxster to get the handle on dealing with out of control cars!

As far as colours go for me Speed Yellow is THE colour!

Certainly keen on the white with the new 19" Carerra wheels - they are really lovely.

Quick update for those who had asked.

Now covered 14,000 since picking her up, brand new end of March.

No probs so far. The 2.9 is much quicker than the 2.7 of my 987 Boxster. Sounds fantastic...

Something else I have come to realise, the Cayman feels like a completely different car to the Boxster. So much more rigidity, though a less comfortable ride - the Cayman feels much more hardcore. I love the looks and am soooo glad I picked Guards Red over my usual choice of Black - I think the brighter colours really fit with the Caymans personality. 6 speed box soooo much nicer than 5 speed.

Downsides? Well the funny booming sensation in the cabin that messes with your middle ear took some time to get used to. I think I have now tuned it out (got used to it!), but sometimes still get a strange 'blocked up' feeling in my ears.

I hate the hill start assist! Why, on a car where you have to pay extra for a thicker steering wheel, do you get this bit of technology fitted as standard? It feels like your brakes have jammed on when you set off from an incline. Why, why, why, fit it?? fking hate it!

Stupid little arrow over the digital speedo suggesting when you should change up for max fuel economy - don't notice it now, but used to piss me off at first - again, pointless.

A part from those little niggles, I love the bloody thing to bits and not once, for one millisecond, do I ever regret buying over a 330ci sport or TTS - the Cayman is in a different league in every respect.

Awesome - thanks for the update.

I have a real thing for a Guards Red Boxster with black hood.

The 2.9 feel much quicker than your old S then..??

Hello mate,

No, I didn't have a Boxster S, just a normal 2.7 987 Boxster. I would say that the 265bhp 2.9 of the Caymen matches the speed of the 3.2 S Boxster I have driven, but the 3.4 S is much quicker.

If you do have a gen 1 Boxster or Cayman, I would say the 2.9 of the gen 2 is worth the extra grunt.

Hi Paul,

Nice to see another Cayman in Guards!!!! The Cayman next to the Boxster in you profile has different wheels to the one in your garage picture? Have you got two sets of alloys?

Cheers

I noticed exactly the same thing when I borrowed a Cayman S about a month ago. Similar sound to a car makes with the sunroof fully open?

Yep, that is it. The dealer made me feel like a I was a right when I mentioned it. I have got used to it now, but it is a design fault that some may not accept.

Hi Frank - well spotted! Yes, I have two sets. It came with the 17"s originally (they are on the picture with my Boxster). I've also got the Cayman S 18"'s, which are on the car now. I love the look of them both.

The 17"s are going back on next month in time for winter (and they are quieter on the roads too - every little helps with the stresses of the commute in the cold winter! smile.

Paul.

Well, just booked it in for it's 40k service. Thought I should give you an update.

Problems: Speaker rattle and squeak from the rear hatch all covered by Porsche.

Got used to the funny ear blocking movement of the rear hatch.

2.9 with 6 speed gives huge real world performance advantages over my previous 987 2.7 Boxster with 5 speed. Fuel economy is exactly the same (28mpg overall).

25K out of first set of tyres.

Colchester OPC have looked after me with their usual high standard of service.

Pretty boring really - that is how I like it!

Having the front lip painted to match your body colour has remeinded me I want mine (silver) painted black to match the rest of the car
Me too. Collected a Gen1.S today in Cobalt blue. Would like to get the lip painted matching blue and also the strip and ring around the fogs painted black.

Looking good in Red though, and used to have a White Exige before. I think white is the new "black".

6000 miles in my 2.9 now - nothing much to report except a software glitch which caused a brake warning and some muck which needed clearing out of the radiators.

Stuck some stripes on cool Great car smile
