Hi
I have recently experienced a similar problem on my 996 carrera where the key does not not come out of the igiition easily and when it does it often does not lock the ignition. I have to put the key back in, jiggle it around and then take it back out and seems to do the trick. Although I think it is a matter of time before it gives up completely. Came across this thread which was a really interesting read. I think replacing the iginition switch may resolve the issue, however, have called both GSF and Euro car parts to see if they have the part (used the above part number), but both said they dont stock it. Can anyone out there offer any guidance or advice on whether replacing the iginition switch should resolve the problem described above and where I can source this part from?

many thanks

I have just bought this part today for £13.80 from GSF. Design 911 worked out at £25.00 with delivery, using their website prices. Will fit it tonight, had a dry run yesterday on my 996 and seems quite straight forward.

Replaced ignition switch on mine last week, part was £13 from GSF, torx screwdriver £4.99 from halfrauds, job done in under an hour. It was a little scary removing the vent to get access though! I'm not technically minded and have managed to ruin many things over the years from house stuff to bikes. OPC would have wanted hundreds to do this.

All problems (sticky key barrel, stereo staying on, dash staying on) solved.

Don't be scared of trying this stuff out, having the 911UK chaps on had was very useful.

Hi

I'm wondering if the ignition switch could cause my problem. I only picked the car up Monday, 04 Carerra 2 Cab, (settlement of a debt and some cash) so very little knowledge regarding the car. It's a 1 owner car, bi-annual service's by Porsche, 89,000 miles.

I Drove the car yesterday, 20 mile round trip, no problems parked up back home. Early evening I went to move the car off the drive, The car wouldn't start, Dash lights up engine turns over but never fires. Every time I put the key in and turn on the ignition an oil level display lights up and runs a short calibration or level measurement.

Fuel was low yesterday, Light had just come on so I put some in this morning to ensure it was not a fuel problem.

I also disconected and reconnected the battery - Still no joy

Previously, a couple of days after picking up the car stalled at trafic lights, and wouldn't restart until it had done the oil mesurement / calibration. a few minutes later the car lost power then stalled, I had to wait a few minutes again before it would restart, It did this four times before I got home. It was fine after that until yesterday.

I'm also wondering if this could be an immobiliser issue ? are there any procedures to test the imobilliser ?

Any help would be appreciated.

I had exactly the same problem a couple of months ago. Random cutting out, failing to start. Relay was under a tenner from ECP and <touch wood> has been perfect since then.
