I drove my 96RS at a track day at brands GP a few weeks ago. It's very rarely tracked these days but I needed to do so lap rides for a sponsor. I was stunned at just how good it was and how quick. 1.39 on old cup tyres is stupid fast for a road car.
yes that's fast for a road car alright steveis that on standard suspension/power and road tyres ?
The car is totally standard other than JRZ shock absorbers and a Parr geo, no engine mods. Tyres were cups but very old and worn. I bought them in 2007 for Spa. The car has only done 250 miles since then so they were basically square. Still the vibration went off by the afternoon. There would be another second in a fresh set

Not sure why "iconic" status matters ? If I want my GT3 to be "iconic" like the 964 RS and 993 RS, it means I will have to wait 10-15 years to see it happen. I am not interested to keep my GT3 that long and at the rate of 15-20 track days a year, it may be "iconic" in 15 years, but I'd rather have a new, faster 911 at that time. Sure a 964 RS is iconic - I still hope to buy one one day - but compared to a modern 911 it feels agricultural to me with a redline almost 2000 revs below that of a gt3. I have had a few aircooled 911s and liked them in their time but they are classics now. I couldn't care less what others think of my car, whether it is iconic or not, I just don't like to be overtaken.
The GT3 MkI is now on the cusp of 10 years old.Mine is on Classic car trackday insurance --- so I am waiting no time, it is a Classic !
And that's just one more thing for me to love about it.
Have you noticed how quickly the latestwizbang-poppers now seem to become de-passe ?

The 996 GT3 Mk1 is/will be an icon. The last homologation special (FIA GT Series) hand built by Weissach, 1st ever production car to lap Nurburgring in less than 8 minutes, 3rd in Evo's 100 greatest driver's cars of all time and generally loved by all journos who've ever driven it. Genuine race specificaton componentry, and the chassis IS compliant yet razor sharp. Countless forum entries of owners who cannot praise their GT3 enough.. what more do you need as evidence of a future icon!!!
And bargain of the century --- half the price of a 996GT3RS which is not dissimilar to the 997GT3RS or the facelift which will shortly arrive ?For the price of a Lotus Exige 260 Cup ...

Nobody ever said there weren't improvements from the MkI to the MkII --- but I don't believe that most have found the earlier synchro a particular problem, and has anybody changed the gearbox casing or added the gearbox oil cooler ?
I do know of gearbox synchros replaced at around 60,000 miles with replacement bronze synchros for originality, even thoug the last Mk I cars did have steel synchros fitted.
I also know of 993RS boxes where the steel synchros have been renewed at this kind of mileage ...

9 x GT3 Mk II RS on PH classifieds --- 0 x GT3 MkI CS ---
Maybe that says something ---
Probalby that it is more justifiable to tie up 35K in a car than 65K in the middle of a heavy recession I would imagine. Look at the depreciation curve of both cars and it will tell you another story. It is a shame that the MK1 and MK2 GT3's have been hit so hard. Hopefully they will come back. I hope so as they are very special cars Maybe that says something ---

Mine is at 30k miles, gearbox is all original with a beautiful shift quality. I think people should learn to change gear or drive an automatic! what are cups... slicks ?what are the JRZ's worth ? 1 sec per 60 secs of lap if that ?
