is it true what they say.... will it swap 2 lanes when running over an expansion joint ?

has anyone had a 996 GT2 centre-of-gravtied ? did it help ?

how hard is the ride compared to a 96 Gt3 ?
Hi Jackal,

Dont bother with the 996 GT2, miss it out, go and test drive a 997 GT3 or 997 GT3 RS, then come back and tell us all what you think !!!
Stevie, you do talk the truth, I `m thinking about changing my 996 GT2 for a 997 GT3 RS!biggrin

We all know the GT2's too hardcore for Stevie... how long did he have his before bending it... hehe (But I do lust for his 997 GT3 RS)

C.
Carl,

fking hell, your alive! ...All work and no play with you now. I`m back to graft until around 10-20th December, then off for xmass and new year.
The RS is at Red Line at the moment having some nice little upgrades, ready for seeing the inside of the garage for a few weeks, on trickle charge and under a cover! bit like the life your 996 GT2 has had over the last 3 years and 3miles...

went up the M1 and back this morning in the 993... not ideal it has to be said

i need a more suitable rocketship badly, something that does 150 standing on its head and feels like its doing about 30 at the same time..... guess i nede to test a GT2 and a turbo ASAP

....please explain in more detail?....was your car not fast enough?.....not comfortable enough?.....or perhaps not noticeable enough!!?.....but being speed yellow I am sure that was not the case....let's face it on the M1 it ain't gonna make a huge amount of difference what 911 you are driving.

I think with the two cars you have mentioned only the my last comment might come into play on the M1....."not noticeable enough".

madala, i love mine, don't get me wrong
but its quite focused now and not a long distance car

a more modern longer wheelbased supercar with a >400 lb/ft punch, intergalactic near-200mph gearing etc. is totally different on long journeys.. makes the 993 feel like a skinny hot hatch (which is actually a good thing in most scenrios)

...still really not understanding....if you are wanting to go more "hybrid" and punchy....surely that is going to be just as tiring and perhaps even more uncomfortble and annoying on longish motorway runs....I don't see where you will be getting any benefit on an "M1" run.

whats there to understand ?

allow me to stretch, or hyperbolise (thats probably not a word but who cares) an analogy:

drive to Cannes and back in a 205 GTi 1.6
now do it in a Mclaren Mercedes SLR

are you with me now ? quite a difference eh ?

Dons firesuitsmile My 996 GT2 had comfort seats and cruise, add in it's biblical (oh how I love that word, Clarkson you're a tw*t) biggrin overtaking abilities and you end up with a simply awesome car, that also happens to look great (the best looking 996)? and is indeed a "thrilling" drive.

But I was always left wondering what would happen if I were to happen across a mapped, and exhausted (the car, not the driver) biggrin 996 turbo or GT3 owner on my favorite roads.

From my (admittedly) short stints behind the wheels of a couple of X50 996 Turbos. I think I'd come away with a bloodied nose on anything other than reeeeeeally fast open roads. I'm no driving god, but sat behind the wheel of something I feel confident in, I can "make progress"

The GT2 NEVER really gave me the confidence to take liberties with it (maybe that's a good thing and why it remained shiney side up) woohoo my GT3 on the other hand positively encourages it.

As I said to a mate last weekend (and please forgive me for stirring up the hornets nest again) When he asked me which was the faster of the two (CSL or MK1 GT3) over give and take roads.

"Depends on what you want" I replied.

"How do you mean ?" he responded

Well it depends if you want to FEEL like you're going fast, or whether you want to actually go fast. To that end, the GT3 feels quick with it's short travel and stiff suspension, you have to work to MAKE it go around corners, whilst also being aware of the road surface and just how bumpy it may or may not be. The CSL glides over the same roads at higher speeds, with no tramlining, no drama and the minimum of effort and input from the driver"

I think a comparison of the GT2 and the Turbo leads to EXACTLY the same question.

In it's favour the GT2 looks the canines gonads, it's depreciation will be glacial (and if you ask Supermono they'll be worth a small fortune by the end of the next millenium) There's no doubt a huge amount of kudos attached to owning/driving a GT2 that's missing from the Turbo ownership experience (dons flamesuit again) hehe

Which is best on the ROAD in all conditions ? Let battle commence . . .

hehe

Well put,

I think you just have to remember most petrolheads can get 80-90% out of a Turbo on the road where I'd guess you are down at 40% or less can get the best out of a GT2. With lots of driver training and a properly setup GT2 the car is simply amazing, without driver training and previous 911 experience so you understand the weight transfer the GT2 will be slow and feel frankly dangerous.

nice post slippy

for me, the looks/cache/specialness would be everything as would the slow depreciation or lack of it

i probably wouldn't bother chucking it around lanes
i have my 993 for that or i could pick up an old elise
and tbh. I dont really do that sort of driving anymore
