As both of you have good knowledge of where I come from, to be clear it's the 996 GT2 which has been intriguing me with the thought of how close to a 996 GT3 could it handle. I probably already share Isaldiri's perspective on the 997 GT2 so was less interested in that.

My impression is that technically you can make a cracking track car out of a 6GT2. However the limitations may be reduced ability to lap 'endlessly', higher consumable wear, and reduced options for alloys/tyres. However, if one is perhaps less aggressive or 'demanding' of the car then it could be a cracker.
As I said, you'll need to get some serious stoppers on it, not so much to stop it, but to save them wearing out too quickly.

The GT2RS intercoolers will be far more efficient than the standard X50 items and will keep inlet temperatures at sensible levels. The Europipe exhaust has massive cats (again will keep temperatures sensible) and they're beautifully fabricated. No reason to think you won't be able to lap endlessly, just be aware it'll go through fuel at a rate that's quite frankly unsociable (after a particularly bad day in the office I managed to burn through a full tank of fuel in less than 100 miles...) eekhehe whilst "touring" up in the wilds of N.Wales.

No shortage of wheels. Pretty sure you can get these in 12 X 18

http://www.bbs-usa.com/race_wheels/wheel_details.c...

nice and light too.

"Tires" : get yourself on to Rennlist, plenty have tracked (and maybe still are) them across the pond. They'll be no shortage of suggestions, plenty running front sizes considerably larger than the standard 235's too.

You're a GT3 guy wink don't really think you'd like the gt2 tbh. well at least the 7gt2 anyway. I've not tried the 6gt2 to be fair so it might be pretty different but the 7gt2 didn't quite do it for me. Oodles of power and a hell lot less boring than a turbo but just not the same 'feel' in the car as the 3. Car I drove was fully stock though, might well be some tweaks like what noneedtolift did would transform the car...
The 996 gt2 has significantly more feedback and connection than the 997 counterpart. Once fettled it makes for a more challenging and interesting circuit car over all 996 GT3 variants (IMHO).

This is not correct they are pretty similar in basic chassis spec, the 7 just moves the game on further. The 7 can be similarly fettled with motorsport parts and have as much feedback and connection as desired.

So can a Maybach if you fit enough bits. As far as factory cars are concerned my statement is correct i'm afraid. The 7 is remote and over polished by comparison. Don't let emotions get in the way.

I kick myself because it had the Carbon seats and handling kit, 19k on the clock and was kept in mint condition. I had it for 2 years bought from Nick Cartwright, the biggest mistake I made was that I would take the GT2 out for a blast on Sat and Sunday take the 355 out and my wife would say to me that the 355 feels like a toy that just made a loud noise but felt no quicker than her car. I should have never compared the two but thats life, didn't loose any money, could have made a lot as it popped up recently for 130K. Stunning looks but if i did get another one, it would be LHD and manual asI don't think there worth 100k. Best looking Ferrari by far especially from the side, or any angle for that matter.

Lovely car - mine was Argento

Also would get a LHD next as RHD is compromised imo
I was thinking lightweight buckets, lightweight battery, carbon bumpers, lighter exhaust , upgraded suspension and brakes plus some new tyres and some harnesses would make a lovely car. Don't think it would be any slower than a GT4 (with a proper engine) and looks (personal opinion) - would make a lovely car I think

Nowhere close to a GT2, but that was too fast for the road anyway imo
Thanks, you have now ignited my 355 fire again.
You are welcome - I do that to myself every 3-6 months .... i even have a list somehwere of modifications I want to do/research further - i spend way too much time on this stuff
Apart from 60s Ferrari designs, the 355 is possibly my favourite looking Ferrari, purely from a symmetry and aesthetics point of view. It's just that type of car that you could just look at it and be rather happy but I feel with the GT2 I get both, adore the looks and the way the thing gets down the road and also how it stops, I really struggle what to replace it with. The 997 I think might be a bit to refind for me also I prefer the cleaner understated lines.

A chap I knew modified a road 6GT2 in the UAE for one hour sprint races. Can't remember what the mods were (other than the standard FIA compliance stuff like cage/extinguisher etc) but it was fast (very fast!) and durable for a couple of seasons before the regs moved on.

At the same time one of the other competitors took a road 6TT, junked the front diff, lightened the car, uprated the turbos, aero and suspension, but struggled with reliability and when it did work couldn't get close to the GT2.

I guess you could conclude the platform of the GT2 is basically right for a track car.

Agree, for me the list of ferraris is sth like 250 SWB, F40 and then 355 in terms of looks .... 2 of those are unachievable unfortunatelty. A 355 needs some work to make it a sharp(er) drivers tool - would be fun to try if they were not so expensive to buy nowadays.

I do prefer the look of the 996 GT2 to the 997 - never got on with that front bumper and the interior. Much prefer 996 on both. Had I not crashed my 2, i would love to optimise one to my liking, just not sure I should tempt my fate ....certainly will never use one as an all weather car again - the FF does that job better than anything - drove up a mountain at a brisk pace today and it gives so much more confidence, at least going uphill - downhill the weight is a bit concerning

Same taste !! 250 SWB has got to be possibly the best looking car of all time ! F40, well that's just bedroom poster material.
I was going to take mine to Goodwood this morning but I know what my car is like when it's damp, your just short shifting and not using any boost, still brisk but no point. It's now placed in storage so out of site and mind.
The FF is a brilliant car, best of all worlds.

Did you right your 996 off ?

How's the car J?

I'm on the verge of letting mine go, had some strong offers in. It's just cost me a fortune on a clutch, coil packs, plugs, leak repair and some tidy up jobs and that's not even a logged service! Getting tempted by other cars now, the old GT2 team seems to be breaking up, sad times frown

Been a great ownership, it's a minter now for someone else to enjoy.

Thats the thing Perry, once your out and want to get back in you realise exactly how much these things have jumped if you've done all the profit and need to start fresh. Im trying
my best to keep the car but add because i know once the weather gets better and that harness is on and that exhaust is popping away, Ill think what the HELL have I just done selling it.

Hi Rich,

Good to hear from you, remember speaking a few times at various 911UK meets, sad to see your GT3 is gone!

Not sure what I'm doing with the GT2 yet, will probably collect it tomorrow and see how it goes. I'm already regretting selling it and I still own it so I dread to think what I'd be like if I sold it.

Cheers,
Gavin

It's a poor show, 2 cars sold, one sadly written off and now J is thinking about selling, again.

Will hopefully get mine back tomorrow, need to drive it over to North Wales again and remember what it's like, it hadn't moved for 4 months before it went in last week.
