Official EU fuel consumption and emissions are measured on a rolling road, following a precise sequence of stops, starts, acceleration, cruising and braking - which is repeated precisely in each car tested. There are no hills, there is no wind resistance, all ancillaries are switched off - as is the heating/air-con system (the test is done at room temperature inside a laboratory) - to make the test repeatable regardless of the standard spec of the car they are testing.

From the above, it is easy to see that these figures in no way replicate real use: However, they do provide a like-for-like comparison between one car and another. (Bit like APRs then).

The problem is, that these figures are quickly becoming further and further removed from real customer figures - as manufacturers are developing technologies to 'cheat' the test, rather than save fuel in the real World! e.g. Stop/Start rarely gets used in real life as the temperature is too low or too high, or you have the air-con or heating switched on, or the lights and wipers are draining the battery, or you can't be bothered to put it in neutral every time you stop, etc... Also, real roads where I live have hills and wind resistance, so aerodynamics start to come into the equation (especially with big SUVs) But most of all, if you have a car that does 0-100kph in 6 seconds, you tend to do that!!! Whereas, on the official test, they never use full-throttle acceleration in any car that does 0-100kph in less than about 12 seconds.

So, as a manufacturer, you want stop/start, electric motors for low speed acceleration (they have massive torque from rest and are much better at this than any ICE) and thumping great turbos that don't fire up until you are past 60 mph (the test never goes faster than this)... Oops, I seem to have just described the hybrid X6 BMW wink

ETA. You then get fantastic figures in the EU test, low VED, and a great marketing story, but end up with customers complaining that they can't do any better than half the mpg figures quoted in the brochure wink

OK I'm going to be unduly negative here, advance warning!

Cayenne = pointless lardy tank.

Still only 240bhp with a weight of 2,315 kg.
For that same £44k you can get the Boxster-S, 310bhp pushing 1,430 kg

Sure if you throw enough fuel and tyre money at it you almost get to performance levels of a leisurely driven standard boxster but with half the fun having to endure that rev-free diesel engine. Oh joy. Also you (obviously) STILL get better mileage out of the Boxster-S.

I still have to question why anyone would want such a heavy machine - 885kg of extra pig iron and dead weight - what is the point of these cars?? Is it so you can win a bet on how much money you spend on running it? Also they are all pig fugly except for the turbo, which just looks like a car of giant wallet sapping proportions.

I guess I'm not the ideal buyer of one of these am I? wink

So come on - tell me the good points - people - I'm curious what they are..

Sorry wrong it weighs 2080Kg, they have removed 400 pounds and upped the power some, and of course added the 8 speed box, it's light years ahead of the old one and out of the ball park from the "TOW RAG". With added "Stop start" It could be good, I test drive one next week for a day, so I will come back and let you know.

Drove my friends RR Sport 2.7 TD last week which has done 90K and it felt very good and rattle free.

I have driven a couple of Cayennes (V8s and pre face lift diesel) and they have much better handling and feel more nimble in comparison. I also like the looks but didnt find the old one that bad too.
