Hi there

We currently looking into the possibility of substituting the Tiptronic transmission vibration damper with an alternative clutch component! We have heard rumours that it is possible to fit a Manual transmission Pressure plate and friction plate in its place (minus release bearing).

Can anybody out there shed any light on this. If this is a viable solution it would potentially save Tipper owners a sizeable amount of cash!

Many thanks

I have heard the same, don't know anyone that has had it done and its a pressing problem for me as it seems the damper has gone in my 968. Kev Eacock will be sorting the car for us I reckon, he said something to me the other week about the job or cheap parts or something but I can't remember the details.

All sorted, clutch fitted and running smooth as you like! FYI a 2.5 944 clutch is a definite no-go due to the crank sensor pickup! No vibration to be felt anywhere.

Cheap solution and a damn sight more permanent than a 968 Rubber vibration setup!

Simon did you use a 968 dual mass flywheel and clutch, or is it possible to use S2 parts?

A follow up on this topic as my 968 needs a damper sooner rather than later and I'm interested in whether a manual clutch ass'y is a proven replacement for the rubber doughnut.... thoughts, ideas please! smile

Its a bodge and I was surprised to see Buttercup considering it, let alone doing it.

Better to buy a new cush drive. I know that its dear, but better than lashing it up, surely?

In theory yes but its a massive design flaw in the cars as the one they used is just not up to the torque exerted on it by the engine, do a track day and its toast, drive the car hard and its toast. On mine the PO had replaced it a couple of years before I bought the car. When it went and needed replacing it had done maybe 25k miles, before I sold the car it seemed it had gone again so I wasn't to upset to take a bath on resale.

In short I just wouldn't touch a 968 tiptronic with a barge pole after the experience I had with her, worst car I have ever owned by a very large margin and a complete money pit much related to the trans setup.

Interested in this topic sonar has anyone had any success? Is it a viable solution or a pipe dream, would like to know more; not happy with $ spent for the OEM Flex Damper; you would think that someone would have come up with an alternative solution to this design flaw by now wink

Its a bodge that people have used on 944s too, using an old clutch.

Hi Porschapart,
I believe you may know my car already (K62JCH) so may be well placed to look at this option on a joint venture... is there any further feedback on the viability of this?
FYI - From further investigation I don't think the rattle on my car is actually the damper plate so perhaps I have a little time to play with here but I suspect it will only be a matter of time...
According to howmanyleft website, there's only 31 Tip Coups left on British roads....
Thoughts?
Chris
