996 GT3 Mark 1 or Mark 2?
Discussion
I don't want to put a dampener on things but, regarding investment, a car needs to double in value every decade just to stand still in real terms. For example, at RPI of 5% (currently 4.7) £40000 compounds up to £65000 by 2020. Add in insurance and maintenance and you are likely to be well over £80,000. And that is assuming you own the car outright. If it's on finance you would need closer to £100,000 to recoup all your real costs.
Very few cars actually make money, some just cost less than others over the years. Unless you own something very special and few Porsches achieve that status - try compounding up the RPI (at more than 20% in some years) on the price of a new RS from the seventies and see what it would have to be worth today just to have stood still. Sobering. And that's before the tens of thousands that will have been spent on it over the years.
But investment is not the be all and end all - as any GT3 owner, Mk1 or 2, knows. Difficult to put a price on the way they make you feel.

I wouldn't under estimate a MK1 GT3. There is very little between a MK1 and a MK2 with similar set ups and tyres on a lap. There is also very little difference between a MK2 996GT3 and a 997GT3 on a lap once the 996 is running track orientated rubber which is where most of the 997 gains came from in the first place. On that basis I'd say that by contempoary standards a MK1GT3 remains a very fast car
Not much between them on the road IMO (I owned a Mk1 with Manthey K400 kit)
Mk2 has stronger brakes (6pot vs 4pot on the Mk1) which is a consideration if you drive hard on track (I upgraded mine to Alcon discs + Mk2 calipers)
Gearbox is stronger in the Mk2 (steel synchro rings instead of brass, apparently, which makes for less wear...mine used to grind going into 3rd sometimes, fixed when I had the 'box rebuilt...but on hindsight I'd have opted for a Mk2)
Mk1 wheels are a NIGHTMARE to wash (v fiddly)
Slight power advantage on the Mk2 car, noticeable but not massive.
If I were choosing on hindsight, I'd go for the Mk2 car...but it's not a huge margin. The Mk1 was fabulous and they are very special cars. With the K400 kit, mine was pleasingly hardcore (would be too loud for some though - have a drive/ride in a tuned car before committing, and get used to the standard car first, inc proper setup)
For my money the latest 997 GTS may very well be slightly quicker (tho I'd be surprised if there was much difference on track, given similar tyres) but it's a HELL a lot more £££ than a 996 GT3, will lose a HELL of a lot of that £££ over 3yrs, and will IMO have far LESS character. GT3 every time for me (apart from the lack of back seats...lol)
