How would anyone know that unless they were the best GT3 driver in the world? What he appears to be saying is that using the same driver i.e. him, that one is faster than the other under similar conditions. That's as fair a comparison as you can realistically ask for. But I'll let him chime in to confirm that.
I think that most drivers are aware Of the ability that they have. I would expect the majority to extract more of the GTRs potential than that of the GT3 which relys on high skill levels and a very specific driving style to get near the edge of it's envelope hence the question. For example, a 996rs was capable of a 1.15 around the old snetterton layout yet I doubt that many drivers could get below 1.20 including most journos. If the GTR had a theoretical lap of 1.15, I would expect most decent wheelmen to achieve a lap substantially below 1.18. This is one of the reasons why I dont pay any credence to magazines comparing lap times. There is also the issue of tyre pressures which are more critical in the 911, set up, turbo boost etc..

I am not demeaning the GTR, I think that it's a brilliant car, but I am getting tired of these ludicrous comparisons. It is not, and will not - unless 300 kg is taken out of it - ever be a viable track car.

+1

I raced with a former class champion in front wheel drive touring cars who stepped in to a 997 Cup for a season of GT racing. It took him half a season to catch up with the front runners. If someone with proven race experience needs time to extract proper pace from a 911, then frankly the views of journos and owners on this subject should be taken with the appropriate degree of scepticism.

I had a chat with Hans Stuck one day about five minutes after he had tried a gen.1 RS at the NS.

I remember his comments which went something like:

"Cheesus Christ, its a brilliant car, easy to drive for most people at 7/10ths, but if you are going to get the best out of it you need to be very good. It will bite you at 9/10 unless you are a professional driver."

Of course, 7/10 of the car's capabilities is more like 9/10 of mine. The comments of Steve Rance make lots of sense. I have seen four GT3s badly whacked at the track in the last few weeks.

The GTR is not a track car. It's a fast road car.
