997 GT3rs Limited Edition coming?
Discussion
Homogolation / race specialists - can you answer this:
Is the new McLaren GT3 car racing in the same class as the Porsche GT3?
If so do Porsche need to up the power of the RS for competitive reasons?

I expect the MP4-12C GT3 will be able to race in the LMS/ALMS/Le Mans 24 new LMGTE category alongside the 997 GT3 RSR and Ferrari 458 GT2 or whatever it is called. They'll equalise out the power to weight with restrictors if necessary, but certainly I think we'll see this McL lining up alongside the other cars in the not too distant future.
Should be great, it's going to be tough for Porsche but it'll be great!

I think most Porsche owners that own GT cars (hence the real enthusiast rather than the flash ones that go for more comfortable versions) spend the majority of their disposable income on their one sports car. Also, by and large, money on a GT car tends to retain value better than any other of the Porsche range. With all these GT versions being launched, a GT porsche will soon almost be like a common Porsche where the non GT versions will end up depreciating big time! I think this will ruin the exclusivity of the 911 range. Therefore I believe that before an enthusiast purchasing the next 991 GT3RS, he/she would think twice before as just incase another ltd edition version would be launched soon after as its the last version that will hold best future values.
Not confident enough to take you up against a 5k bet, i'm a bit of a wimp! lets just wait till April 7th apparently :-)

I don't think people with 3.8's need to be worried anyway, as most 4.0's will be squirrelled away in garages and collections - rarely to see the light of day, let alone a track. I know certainly if I get one, i'll keep the 3.8 for using and having fun in and will put the 4.0 away for very occasional road use.
If anyone genuinely believes that the 4.0 isn't coming and isn't going to be road legal, then here and now, i'll put up a 5k bet to say otherwise. Any takers?

OPC's now taking orders...
I don't think so - it is still just letters of intent (as least per Porsche Reading and Guildford). And once deposits are taken it is still no guarantee of a car given that demand will certainly outstrip supply. For the '2 RS I am aware that several people had to have their deposits refunded.
If the 7th April date for the press release is accurate, I'd expect that is the date when centres can start taking deposits formally.
Cheers

In my local OPC they said today that they had two deposits. They had been taken for 3.8 cars but the customers had never taken a build slot and to they have somehow been transitioned into 4.0 orders.
Indeed, but that will not put them at the front of the queue, since allocations will be made only once the car has been formally announced.Cheers

Regardless of letters of intent and deposits, OPCs decide who gets a car as the last thing they want is for a car to go to a the wrong person, i.e. a speculator. I've been offered an RS and not had either a letter of intent or deposit on the car because the OPC knows that I'm an enthusiast and not a speculator. Despite the car still trading for a substantial premium at that time, I declined, however, I've asked to be considered for the LE because the car should be out of this world.
The 4.0 won't be allocated by the dealer - it's being allocated by Porsche themselves. Exactly the same as with the GT2RS, the dealer has no say at all. They simply take a few deposits - put the list across to Porsche, who tell the dealer to return Mr X, Mr Y and Mr Z's deposits and inform Mr A that they have a car coming etc...The car will be similar in numbers to the GT2RS too, so expect 1 car per OPC, or possibly 2 if they are lucky.
I don't think the 4.0 is going to massively impact 3.8 values, for the simple reason that 4.0's are going to be a) ultra-rare, and b) trading above list, and if anything, 3.8's might stabilise in value due to the halo effect.
Of course, some people that have been holding out for the 4.0 and don't get an allocation, might decide to just go for a good nearly new 3.8 anyway.
